How about that<\/a>. \u00a0I guess if anything deserves to be in the Toy Hall of Fame, it\u2019s that\u00a0little game which\u00a0seems to have cast a longer shadow over popular culture than its often derided fan base suggests. \u00a0I never played it that much in school, being more a lover of history and historically centered activities. \u00a0Plus, I was never much of a fantasy or sci-fi fan. \u00a0My boys, however, born and raised during the high point of Pottermania and Jackson\u2019s LoTR renaissance, couldn\u2019t help but fall in love with the hobby.<\/p>\nFor what it\u2019s worth, I never put much stock in the stereotype of D&D players. \u00a0The first ones I ever saw\u00a0playing it were in study hall my freshman year. \u00a0Three were football players, one captain of the football team, one class president, and a valedictorian and salutatorian of the graduating class, among others. \u00a0It didn\u2019t dawn on me at the time that folks played D&D for any other reason than they played Poker or Monopoly. \u00a0When the reputation did drop, it seemed to be as much because society as a whole rejected it as any of those fundamentalists who often get the blame. \u00a0It seemed everyone was against it back in the day. \u00a0And I always wondered about that.<\/p>\n
Nonetheless, I see it as a fine\u00a0pastime. \u00a0It encourages reading, study and imagination. \u00a0It also pulls them away from the endless hours some kids spend\u00a0glued to\u00a0digital entertainment. \u00a0If the worst my boys ever did was roll a d20 and use their imaginations to combat fictional characters gleaned from myth and literature, I\u2019d consider myself a good father indeed.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
