Here are a few<\/a> pro-pilgrim<\/a> and pro-Thanksgiving<\/a> posts<\/a> from blogging past<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I love the pilgrims and the whole story of the first Pilgrim\u2019s thanksgiving. \u00a0I know, we could go on forever about the details. \u00a0Truth be told, I never heard about them until first grade. \u00a0My parents told me many stories about our nation, but most of them stopped around the Depression. \u00a0What I picked up from there, I learned from culture, school or books. \u00a0The 1st Grade lesson wasn\u2019t deep, just the basics: seeking freedom to worship, rough first winter, Indians step in and save the day, festival of thanks with both the settlers and the natives. \u00a0In other words, what could have been.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s where I like to focus. \u00a0 I never got into the tendency in Catholic circles to bash and trash the Pilgrims, or puritans in general. \u00a0Growing up and in my college days, puritanism wasn\u2019t exactly the problem most Catholics I knew were struggling with. \u00a0Even now, most don\u2019t tend toward that particular extreme. \u00a0 So I\u2019ve kept my admiration for the pilgrims, their courage, their devotion, and their symbolic defiance close to my heart over the years. \u00a0In fact, every time someone stands up and says we\u2019ll take it no more, no matter what the cost, we could do worse than naming those Plymouth Puritans as a class example. \u00a0Imagine if half the Christians in the world threw ourselves into our faith with the courage and sacrifice of the pilgrims.<\/p>\n

So thanks to those courageous voyagers from all those years ago. \u00a0Because of them, we have a national day set aside to enjoy the family, give thanks, and remember that for all we might be lacking, there are people in the world who would kill to have our worst day.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
