Donald McClarey, at The American Catholic, has a wonderful post reminding us of one particular Christmas past<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A generation of youngsters handling\u00a0adversity a little differently than some of our braver, stronger youngsters today<\/a>.<\/p>\n

No doubt we can find things to criticize about how they did it. \u00a0Or we can invoke Dresden as good as always. \u00a0But 72 years ago, it was a different Christmas. \u00a0My Dad\u2019s brother served as a medic in Patton\u2019s army. \u00a0Note, most usually declared that they served \u2018with Patton.\u2019 \u00a0He was part of the force that rescued the 101st that didn\u2019t need rescuing. \u00a0Shortly before he died, he received a belated commendation for his service in the Ardennes Offensive. \u00a0He called my Dad and asked what that was about. \u00a0Dad explained that it was the Battle of the Bulge. \u00a0My uncle\u2019s response was priceless: \u2018I didn\u2019t know what they called it. \u00a0I just know it was cold and people kept trying to kill me.\u2019<\/p>\n

Of course we have our best and brightest today<\/a>, serving even now so that we can\u00a0stay nice and comfy at home. \u00a0Therefore, in tribute to those today, and that generation of snowflakes, c. 1944, and all \u00a0who missed Christmas for our sake, I say thank God. \u00a0May a small portion of the blessings they have earned come back to them pressed down, shaken together and running over.<\/p>\n
