So it\u2019s 2017. \u00a0All joking aside. \u00a0In a matter of weeks, Donald J. Trump will be our president. \u00a0In some ways, Trump was a unifying individual. \u00a0 Over the years, both sides of the aisle found reasons\u00a0to dislike him.<\/p>\n
To the liberals of America, he represented the unbridled avarice that came do define post-1980 America. \u00a0To the conservatives, he represented the hedonism and decadence that came to define modern America.<\/p>\n
And yet it was the conservatives who blinked, and looked\u00a0the other way. \u00a0While many didn\u2019t vote for him, many did. \u00a0Despite his behavior, his rhetoric, his vulgarities, his deplorable treatment of women, his race-baiting demagoguery, conservatives went to the booth and picked Trump on election day.<\/p>\n
I get that there are reasons. \u00a0There are always reasons. \u00a0But there is a difference between a reason and an excuse. \u00a0I get that the left, drunk in its arrogance and assurance of victory, thought nothing of defining those conservatives as deplorables, as racists, as human bilge who were getting what they deserved. \u00a0I get that conservatives looked at Trump, at Clinton, and back at Trump and saw no meaningful\u00a0difference. \u00a0And I get that conservatives, seeing people excuse, defend, and even cheer the racist and phobic language aimed at them saw little to lose by supporting him.<\/p>\n
Nonetheless, support him they have. \u00a0A wild card, a man who clearly can get what he wants. \u00a0And yet a man who has confounded our ability to figure out what he wants. \u00a0Even in the waning days of the campaign, you had people convinced he was just in it for a publicity stunt. \u00a0Even some of his staunchest supporters weren\u2019t sure.<\/p>\n
And now this man, this man of questionable values and contemptible behavior, this man who people can\u2019t figure out because we don\u2019t know where he stands on virtually anything, this man who stood against what conservatives have believed for generations, is going to be president.<\/p>\n
Should we pray for him? \u00a0Of course. \u00a0Should we hope he does good and not evil? Naturally. \u00a0Is there a way to oppose Trump that has nothing to do with Christ or righteousness? \u00a0You bet. \u00a0Are some who oppose Trump no better? \u00a0It can\u2019t be denied.<\/p>\n
Nonetheless, he is coming to the White House with a giant badge that says \u2018Conservative Christians approve this message.\u2019 \u00a0And the minute \u2013 the second \u2013 he departs from the narrow way, then those Christians had best be the first to stand up and scream in protest. \u00a0They have mud on their hands already. \u00a0Adding mud to their face won\u2019t improve their appearance.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
