Eh<\/a>. \u00a0 Sometimes I imagine a world where my president elect doesn\u2019t stoop to the level of a kindergartner. \u00a0Then I remember, oh yeah. \u00a0This is the \u00a0U.S. in the 21st century. \u00a0We\u2019ve worked long and hard to get to this level of maturity.<\/p>\n

As for his response, if it was anyone else, I\u2019d be shocked that he would resort to a childish dig at Ms. Streep\u2019s acting abilities. \u00a0Then I\u2019m reminded\u00a0Trump. \u00a0I mean, President Trump.<\/p>\n

As for the rest, she\u2019s a big girl. \u00a0If she wanted to use the stage and spotlight to attack Trump, then Trump had every right to respond. \u00a0In typical fashion, he responded in a way that made him look worse. \u00a0He seems to have an incorrigible knack for taking situations where he could come out looking good and finding the one thing to say so that he doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, expect this for the next four years. \u00a0It isn\u2019t as if we\u2019ve not been heading to this level of partisanship, where every corner of our society is swallowed up by political wrangling. \u00a0And it isn\u2019t as if celebrities only recently began commenting on politics. \u00a0Will Rogers made a career of it. \u00a0And we all know Sinatra campaigned for Kennedy.<\/p>\n

Has it become more factional, more personal, more vitriolic? \u00a0Sure. It isn\u2019t as if consistency or humility were a big part of Ms. Streep\u2019s overall commentary<\/a>. But that\u2019s\u00a0a development decades in the making.<\/p>\n

When Reagan was elected, the first celebrities I remember lashing out at him were Christopher Reeve and Bruce Springsteen. \u00a0As a youngster, it was quite a shock to see Superman and a rock star talking about\u00a0a sitting president the way they did. \u00a0It didn\u2019t get kinder and respectful as the years rolled on.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, I figure we\u2019ll look back at this with fond memories for\u00a0the gentleness and manners with which Streep and Trump approached the issue. \u00a0At least if the evolution of our social discourse over the last decades is any indicator.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
