I can\u2019t help but notice, however, that half of everyone cheering Wikileaks now were cursing it a half dozen years ago. Likewise, half of everyone cursing Assange and illegally exposed documents now were cheering the same a half dozen years ago. \u00a0And oddly enough, there\u2019s nothing really different except who is being embarrassed. \u00a0Goldberg explains:<\/p>\n
The only truly relevant new fact is that Assange is a useful tool for Republicans, and all other facts must be bent \u2014 on the left and right \u2014 to fit that new reality.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
It\u2019s the basis for our modern political dialogue. \u00a0Our approach to social issues. \u00a0Our reaction to events and tragedies. \u00a0How we apply our principles and standards. \u00a0Does it advance the agenda? \u00a0Do we win? \u00a0Is it helping the narrative? \u00a0If so, then we react one way. \u00a0Otherwise, we react another way.<\/p>\n
I notice some Catholics saying that anything short of total condemnation of Russia and Wikileaks is akin to crawling into bed with Trump and Satan. \u00a0Yet I remember warning Catholics back in the day who were cheering Assange that maybe, just maybe, he might leak documents from someplace like the Vatican. \u00a0Or worse for some, the DNC.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s not easy being objective. \u00a0Especially in a nation that elevates punditry over principles. \u00a0But the best way to do it is to imagine the same thing you\u2019re cheering for being against\u00a0something you value. \u00a0It won\u2019t solve everything, but it\u2019s a start.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
