The Blizzard of \u201978<\/a>. \u00a0Literally a \u2018perfect storm\u2019, everything was set for Ohio to get pummeled.<\/p>\nWe lived in town then. \u00a0Though my sister was dating her future first husband, who lived out in the country. \u00a0I remember because a friend of my parents visited just before it hit. \u00a0They had a young daughter who was terminally ill, who died later that year. \u00a0I still think of that.<\/p>\n
Anyway, the storm hit. \u00a0And it hit so hard even Burl Ives couldn\u2019t do it justice. \u00a0Most of the next day was a whiteout. The snow itself \u2013 not drifts, just the snow \u2013 was over my head. \u00a0Drifts covered cars and, sometimes, houses. \u00a0Entire districts\u00a0out in the country were cut off for weeks. \u00a0When we were able to shovel the sidewalks, my Dad and my sister\u2019s boyfriend took over, since I couldn\u2019t reach. \u00a0The piles of snow ended up being higher than either of them. \u00a0Good for snow forts.<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t just snow. \u00a0It was bitter cold. \u00a0It went from a mild 30 degrees to single digits in just hours. \u00a0Wind speeds were clocked upwards of 70 mph. \u00a0According to the meteorologists, we recorded some of the lowest pressure readings in the history of the US. \u00a0 The storm lasted almost three days.<\/p>\n
We ended up missing almost\u00a0two full weeks of school. \u00a0On the following Monday, the schools closed for the whole week up front. \u00a0There was great rejoicing in Ohio then. \u00a0But not for all. \u00a0Seventy people died in that storm. \u00a0More than half in Ohio.<\/p>\n
But that\u2019s the way it was, 39 years ago today.<\/p>\n
