I keep getting hits about the Budweiser Superbowl ad<\/a>. \u00a0What was the problem? \u00a0To me, it celebrated America\u2019s past a a land of opportunity, a shining beacon to the oppressed of the world.<\/p>\n

It still is. \u00a0We still let people in by the boatload. \u00a0And compared to many countries, we\u2019re a breeze to become a citizen. \u00a0I knew a young lady in graduate school who was from the former Soviet Union. \u00a0She was working to become a US citizen someday.<\/p>\n

Problem? \u00a0She couldn\u2019t stand our country. \u00a0Everything \u2013 culture, movies, music, books, education, lifestyles, you name it \u2013 was a target for her scorn. \u00a0One day I finally asked her why she wanted to move here since she obviously couldn\u2019t stand the place.<\/p>\n

Easy, she said. \u00a0The countries she would love to move to would take too long to ever become a citizen. \u00a0She would die an old lady before she could become a full citizen in some of those places. \u00a0So it was off to the USA (since staying in Russia was not an option for her).<\/p>\n

Sure, I get it. \u00a0The current twofold kerfuffle over vetting immigrants from nations hostile to the US and the influx of illegal immigration, especially from the South.<\/p>\n

But those don\u2019t have to become politicized, or made to be \u2018them vs. us.\u2019 \u00a0Unfortunately, both sides have done their best to pit one group against the other. \u00a0Do you not care about refugees seeking a new life away from death and carnage? \u00a0Do you not care about the well-being of all Americans? \u00a0The answer should be we care about both.<\/p>\n

Sadly, at least with\u00a0the rhetoric, it comes off as one group can just suck on it, because the other group is the one that matters. \u00a0The best approach \u2013 and the only valid Christian approach \u2013 is to care about both equally. \u00a0We want to be a place for all to come and be welcomed.<\/p>\n

They need to follow the laws, however, and if the laws make it difficult, then change the laws. \u00a0Don\u2019t just flip the high middle one to laws in general. \u00a0Flipping the bird to laws you dislike is akin to eating potato chips. \u00a0Once you start, you just can\u2019t stop. \u00a0Likewise, we don\u2019t have much experience welcoming people from hostile nations. \u00a0If it takes some thinking through, that\u2019s fine. \u00a0Find the balance between welcoming and vetting and make sure both immigrants and Americans know we have their backs.<\/p>\n

And for heaven\u2019s sake, don\u2019t rely on \u2018lightning kills more than terrorists\u2019 do. \u00a0That\u2019s translated as \u2018don\u2019t worry, odds are it will be some other dumb schmuck family who is boo-hooing at the cemetery and not you.\u2019 \u00a0A terrorist attack is more than just body counts.<\/p>\n

Whatever the terrorist is, it is an attack on America as a whole, who we are, the American family. \u00a0And should be treated as such. \u00a0If the most you can say is \u2018don\u2019t worry as long as it\u2019s someone else\u2019, then you had best find a different reason.<\/p>\n

So if we could pull the issue of immigration from the sludge pit of partisan agendas, I think seeing a commercial like this would be cause to be glad about our country\u2019s history, not grounds for yet another boxing match over \u2018not our country, sure as hell not your country, only my country when it finally lives up to my standards.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
