Anyway, in this case there were reasons for the sound and fury. \u00a0My wife, a former educator who taught in public, private and home school settings, was no fan. \u00a0In her words, she couldn\u2019t imagine a less qualified person to be named to the position.<\/p>\n

For my part, I told her I could come up with a list. \u00a0But I saw her point.<\/p>\n

Why the vitriol? \u00a0Was it just a case of the usual \u2018Trump! Watergate! Pearl Harbor! 9\/11! The Holocaust! \u00a0We\u2019re all going to die!!\u2019? \u00a0Not really. \u00a0And with all due respect to my lovely bride, it\u2019s not just a case of DeVos\u2019s qualifications.<\/p>\n

Terry Mattingly at Get Religion unpacks a few angles we might otherwise miss<\/a>. \u00a0I like Douthat\u2019s subtle observation that Calvinism plays like\u00a0the new Communism. \u00a0Well, strike that. \u00a0We never seem at a loss to find\u00a0something mitigating about Communism\u2019s track record. \u00a0Calvinism on the other hand?<\/p>\n

Likewise, kudos for linking to that WaPo piece about Obama\u2019s education legacy<\/a>. \u00a0FWIW, my wife was no more a fan of Obama\u2019s\u00a0track record regarding the state of our schools. \u00a0And it\u2019s noteworthy that it was under his administration that we went from proud supporters of public education to home school.<\/p>\n
