But here\u2019s something else that hit me. \u00a0Listening to Theresa May respond<\/a>, I thought about our whole \u2018you don\u2019t scare me, I\u2019m going shopping\u2019 approach to Islamic terrorism. \u00a0In fact, many people interviewed yesterday by different outlets said variations of the same thing. \u00a0We\u2019re not afraid. We\u2019re going on with business. \u00a0We\u2019re not going to let it stop us.<\/p>\n

Perhaps we should let it change us. \u00a0They say the purpose of terrorism is to get us to fall apart. \u00a0Disrupt our lives. \u00a0Cause divisions. \u00a0But is it possible that our whole \u2018keep calm and carry on\u2019 approach isn\u2019t helping?<\/p>\n

I know. \u00a0People will immediately slam our disastrous responses to 9\/11. \u00a0But just because I say we need to find a different approach doesn\u2019t mean the only alternative is invade Iraq. \u00a0And I\u201dm not really talking about our official response. \u00a0I\u2019m talking about how we, as the people, as citizens of our nation and, more broadly, the world, respond.<\/p>\n

Ever since GW Bush said \u2018our very civilization was under attack \u2013 quick, so shopping!\u2019, there has been something wrong. \u00a0Something that didn\u2019t feel right. \u00a0Even now, as we go on about our business while US troops are still in war zones and are still dying, something doesn\u2019t seem right. \u00a0We could certainly pull all of our troops home, but that doesn\u2019t change things. \u00a0Terrorism is the new normal they say.<\/p>\n

And again, I\u2019m not really talking about our national, government, military or legal responses. I\u2019m talking us schmucks who are every day Joes and Janes or any combination thereof. \u00a0Is telling us to just move on doing us good? \u00a0Doing the fight any good? \u00a0Sometimes I think of us like those antelopes on the Serengeti. \u00a0A lion rushes out and all of the antelope run for their lives. \u00a0As soon as one is brought down, the rest of the herd slows down and goes on about their business while the fallen antelope is devoured.<\/p>\n

Is that a great model for us? \u00a0Because that\u2019s how I feel we\u2019re behaving when this happens. It seems like there\u2019s a disconnect; something isn\u2019t right. \u00a0It does seem to play into this whole \u2018as long as terrorists kill others, it\u2019s the sacrifice I\u2019m willing to make\u2019 attitude. \u00a0I realize that nobody articulates it that way. \u00a0But how else can you interpret the comforting statement that terrorism, while inevitable, is statistically insignificant? \u00a0So was getting attacked by Japanese planes at a Hawaiian military base. \u00a0Compared to auto fatalities in 1941, it didn\u2019t even make 10%. \u00a0 But we got that there was something else; it meant something more than just number crunching to find out if anyone else should be worried.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not proclaiming from on high the ultimate answer. \u00a0I don\u2019t know. \u00a0Should we be called upon to sacrifice more? \u00a0Give of ourselves? \u00a0Tin and rubber drives? \u00a0Probably mean something else today anyway. \u00a0But I do know that there is something increasingly disconcerting about the whole \u2018we\u2019ll show them, we won\u2019t let them change us.\u2019 \u00a0Maybe we should. \u00a0Perhaps the problem is we\u2019ve needed changing for some time. \u00a0 Just thinking out loud\u00a0as I mourn along with everyone else the lives so tragically taken yesterday.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
