\u00a0Mark Silk at Religion News Service pens a rather critical\u00a0article, not about Russell Moore, but about Russ\u2019s critics<\/a>. \u00a0This is a common narrative I\u2019ve seen for the last week or so.<\/p>\nI won\u2019t get into all of the ins and outs of Russ\u2019s views. \u00a0But I will give my impression\u00a0from those I know in Russ\u2019s denomination\u00a0who have views on the topic.<\/p>\n
First, contrary to bold predictions in the press, Russ wasn\u2019t fired. \u00a0I personally know of few who wanted him to be. \u00a0Those I know who still speak to me and who are in tune with the SBC don\u2019t have a problem with Russ\u2019s views. \u00a0In fact, one fellow I know is himself a never-Trumper. \u00a0The problem he has, and others I\u2019ve talked to had, is that Russ was becoming, well, condescending and judgmental toward those who did support Trump, treating them as not just a monolithic group, but an inferior one at that. \u00a0A one size fits all condemnation that he was, happily, too good to be deserving of.<\/p>\n
As a pastor you never want to get up in front of your congregation and say \u2018look at those horrible sinners out there in the world.\u2019 \u00a0Your job is to speak to the people in front of you. \u00a0Sometimes bringing to mind certain blind spots in their lives, if not outright sin. \u00a0And not just the pelvic sins, but sins of greed, gossip (always an easy target), hypocrisy and on and on.<\/p>\n
But in so doing, you should use a copious amount of first person plurals. \u00a0If it doesn\u2019t apply to you, that\u2019s fine. \u00a0Don\u2019t lie and say it does. \u00a0But you make sure you\u2019re not saying they all suck and need to be more like you. \u00a0You don\u2019t want to make everyone feel as if they\u2019re guilty or, worse, inferior to the message giver. \u00a0That\u2019s just common sense. \u00a0Some I talked to felt that Russ was forgetting that little principle. \u00a0Yes he apologized. \u00a0And many are hoping\u00a0the tone changes and doesn\u2019t go back to what warranted the apology in the first place.<\/p>\n
But for the most part, it wasn\u2019t the content of his complaints. \u00a0Content that more than one critic otherwise agreed with. \u00a0 Just an observation from those I know who are still in the know of\u00a0the SBC, as opposed to\u00a0the angle the press has focused on with the story.<\/p>\n
