Donald McClarey tries to convince me that Jimmy Carter would pick Trump over Cruz<\/a>.\u00a0 No, wait.\u00a0 It\u2019s real!\u00a0 That\u2019s right, Jimmy Carter said he would prefer Trump over Cruz.\u00a0 Personally, I think it\u2019s a dig on Cruz.\u00a0 I mean, the man is disliked by just about everyone. <\/p>\n

I\u2019m reminded of a special I saw on PBS some years ago.\u00a0 It was about the fall of Communism.\u00a0 Going against the grain of liberal scholarship, it actually allowed for the possibility that Reagan had something to do with it, including the historic Summit at Geneva in 1985.\u00a0 And more to the point, it actually interviewed former Soviets who were at the meeting who seemed to give Reagan the most credit for how things turned out.\u00a0 I know, that\u2019s like a world where American settlers weren\u2019t genocidal, racist, imperialist, mass murderers. <\/p>\n

Nonetheless, it was a well produced documentary.\u00a0 And there was quite a bit of Reagan love.\u00a0 Even from his son Ron Reagan, Jr.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure we all remember that Jr. was no fan of his father.\u00a0 At least as president.\u00a0 And yet, Ron gave probably the best take on the entire monumental conference:<\/p>\n

When the Summit began, Reagan famously bombarded Gorbachev with a laundry list of how evil the USSR was, and how the problems of the Cold War were the fault of the Soviets.\u00a0 Gorbachev responded by saying he didn\u2019t come there to be lectured by Reagan.\u00a0 Oh, and when that leaked out, I remember the uproar, the furor, the panic.\u00a0 This was it!\u00a0 Reagan was going to nuke the world!!!<\/p>\n

But when the dust settled, Reagan and Gorbachev emerged as fast friends, and remained so until Reagan\u2019s last days.\u00a0 It was their friendship that helped bring about a peaceful end to the Cold War, against all the expectations we had only a decade earlier.<\/p>\n

Ron, Jr. pointed out that only Reagan could have gotten away with that.\u00a0 Only he could have sat there and chastised the Soviet leader that way and, not only not cause a war, but end up being friends.\u00a0 It was something Reagan had, a certain \u2018it\u2019 factor.\u00a0 Friendship from the point of strength.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

But not Cruz.\u00a0 I can see Cruz doing the same thing and causing a nuclear war.\u00a0 There is something about him that is abrasive.\u00a0 Offensive.\u00a0 He\u2019s not likable in all the wrong ways.\u00a0 He reminds me of some ministers we used to know in my Protestant days.\u00a0 They were just jerks, plain and simple.\u00a0 Yet when there were problems, they would insist it was all because Jesus said we\u2019d be persecuted.\u00a0 No, we said, it\u2019s not because of Jesus that you have problems.\u00a0 It\u2019s because you\u2019re a jerk.\u00a0 The same, I\u2019m afraid, goes for Cruz.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
