I know almost nothing about this kerfuffle<\/a>. \u00a0A well known conservative\u00a0evangelical apologist has joined the Orthodox Christian tradition. \u00a0That sent off a series of responses from his evangelical brethren.<\/p>\n

The strangest I\u2019ve seen was one penned by a Jeff Maples<\/a>. \u00a0Essentially, a man says he is going to a movie by a director he hates, starring an actor he hates, only pays half attention to the film while he is there, then leaves before it is over. \u00a0That\u2019s about the quality of review we\u2019re dealing with. \u00a0 Others have stepped in to correct Mr. Maples.<\/a><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not only clear he is ignorant on several points of Eastern Orthodoxy, but it\u2019s clear he had no intention\u00a0of learning. \u00a0He reminded me of an old Charlie Brown cartoon strip. \u00a0Charlie and Schroeder are looking at a newspaper and laughing. \u00a0One of the girls walks up and asks what it\u2019s about. \u00a0They don\u2019t know, they say. \u00a0They can\u2019t understand it, which is why they\u2019re making fun of it.<\/p>\n

This is the sort of thing that gives Christian apologetics a bad name. \u00a0I have no beef with people rejecting or criticizing\u00a0other Christian traditions. \u00a0How else will non-Christian movements succeed without us hamstringing each other? \u00a0But at least get it right.<\/p>\n

Not only did he post a string of ill informed zingers (without the possibility of comments I might ad \u2013 a pet peeve of mine), but he has encouraged some pretty stupid comments from his fan base. \u00a0The most hilarious being:<\/p>\n

Yeah, that New Age Orthodoxy with its New Age incense. \u00a0I know plenty of atheists who will hang their heads on that one. \u00a0We don\u2019t have to be experts, and I know we have our own bases of departure when we evaluate things, especially in the realm of religious expression. \u00a0Nonetheless, put some time into it. \u00a0And try \u2013 try \u2013 to give it the courtesy I\u2019m sure we would want from anyone critiquing our own traditions. \u00a0A little \u2018Do unto others\u2019 principle when looking at things with which we may not agree.<\/p>\n
