I stumble across this story<\/a>.<\/p>\nI am humbled, and inspired. \u00a0Think of what she went through. \u00a072 years old? \u00a0If my math hasn\u2019t given out, that means she was born in 1945 (OK, I used a calculator). \u00a0 Think of that. \u00a0She was born before the Civil Rights movement began to gain serious steam. \u00a0Segregation was the name of the game. \u00a0Throughout much of the country, if you were \u00a0African American you were a second class citizen if you were lucky.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m reminded of Nat King Cole (the great Nat King Cole please), one of my parents\u2019 favorites. \u00a0Who couldn\u2019t sit back and spend an evening listening to him sing? \u00a0And yet he once told about the vandalism and threats and even burned crosses in his front yard. \u00a0A superstar celebrity, and still victimized by racism and bigotry of the day.<\/p>\n
Or the well known story of Frank Sinatra stepping in and insisting that Sammy Davis, Jr. be able to stay in the hotels where he was headlining. \u00a0That\u2019s right, he was used as entertainment, but until Sinatra stepped in, \u00a0had to sleep in a hotel for blacks. \u00a0And these were beloved celebrities! \u00a0Imagine the average African American back then.<\/p>\n
That is the world into which Darlene Mullins was born. \u00a0And it didn\u2019t go away before she was three. \u00a0Or thirteen. Yet through it all, she survived. And thrived. \u00a0And persevered. \u00a0And built a wonderful life with her husband and family. \u00a0And now, at 75, she graduated \u2013 with honors!<\/p>\n
Darn her. \u00a0Just when I was wondering if it was worth continuing\u00a0I see that. \u00a0I hope she can sleep well at night knowing that she\u2019s just taken away a million excuses for not pushing forward to the finish line.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
