William Kirkpatrick explains<\/a>. \u00a0Yep. By now we should be able to sing the terrorism song, since the lyrics are so familiar. \u00a0The reluctance to point out the obvious (why would anyone\u2019s initial response to the explosion be that it was terrorism?).<\/p>\n

Questioning the motive is as good as any for demonstrating the point. \u00a0Once the subject is identified, we ponder what could have caused him to snap.<\/p>\n

<\/iframe><\/p>\nBTW, fun point. \u00a0We happened to catch a show on the series \u201cDecades\u201d last night. \u00a0That\u2019s one of those off-cable channels. \u00a0It plays old shows, old news, old reflections from, well, over the decades. \u00a0It happened to be talking about Bill Clinton\u2019s work in brokering the Belfast\u00a0Good Friday agreement. \u00a0Something for which he gets far too little credit. \u00a0Naturally the show talked about the Irish conflict, the terrorism, and the violence during that period.<\/p>\nMy boys, who haven\u2019t heard much about that period, were shocked. \u00a0It\u2019s true, I told them, Muslims don\u2019t hold the patent on terrorism. \u00a0And yet \u2013 point coming here \u2013 growing up, terrorism in my world was as often as not associated with Ireland. \u00a0And more specifically, it was laid firmly at the feat of the Christian Faith in the form of the Protestant and Catholic\u00a0angle of the conflict. \u00a0Few if any ever hesitated to say this was a stain on the Christian reputation, the result of religious conflict, and was blameworthy for the Protestants and Catholics involved. It went without saying. \u00a0Sure there were political and historical causes, but the religious connection was seldom if ever denied or downplayed.<\/p>\nSo you can see how a person\u00a0my age is a bit baffled when something like Manchester happens and, almost immediately, you have people asking what the motive could be, or warning us never to associate such acts with a major world religion. And yet, like clockwork, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lbc.co.uk\/radio\/presenters\/nick-ferrari\/manchester-mayor-bomber-was-a-terrorist-not-muslim\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">it will happen every time<\/a>.<\/p>\nOther predictable reactions take place. \u00a0Why?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know. \u00a0Islamic terrorism, more than threatening life and limb, appears to threaten something else more important\u00a0\u2013 a narrative, a model, a theory, a philosophy, a way of seeing the world \u2013 and rather than admit we could have been wrong, we simply go on telling it like it ain\u2019t. \u00a0Perhaps we hope we can hold out until the problem goes away. I don\u2019t know. \u00a0But the predictability of how it will be treated in the meantime is, at this point, one of the safest bets out there.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"William Kirkpatrick explains. \u00a0Yep.
