Yet somehow, most Americans felt that the attack and the resulting\u00a0casualties were about more than just the numbers. \u00a0I say this because, in the wake of the recent string of terrorist attacks, I\u2019ve already heard \u2013 as if on cue \u2013 a growing \u2018look at the numbers\u2019 approach to the topic.<\/p>\n

I get that there are probably more people killed by antelopes than by terrorists. \u00a0Or something of the sort. \u00a0I understand that. \u00a0But it never kept us from reducing terrorism to just numbers in the past. \u00a0It isn\u2019t as if we looked at Oklahoma City and said \u2018Eh, think how many died from cancer last year.\u2019 \u00a0 Just the opposite.<\/p>\n

I seem to recall\u00a0that England didn\u2019t approach the IRA\u00a0that way either. \u00a0Heck, we don\u2019t do it today. \u00a0Whether mass shootings, or violence against abortion clinics, or a cop shooting an unarmed black man that leads to protests, riots and thousands of hours of coverage, debate, discussion, outrage, we seem to know it\u2019s not just about the numbers.<\/p>\n

Except with these terrorist attacks. \u00a0For some reason, time and again, we\u2019re reminded of the numbers when this particular brand of terrorist attack happens. \u00a0Since 9\/11 on, it\u2019s been the numbers. \u00a0More people die in auto accidents in a month than died on\u00a09\/11. \u00a0More are killed in a month by guns than died on 9\/11. \u00a0After almost every terrorist attack recently \u2013 London, Paris, San Bernardino, Nice \u2013 I see this brought up.<\/p>\n

I wonder why that is. \u00a0There must be a reason. \u00a0It isn\u2019t as if we believe all deaths are just about numbers. \u00a0Heck, hate crime legislation demonstrates that if nothing else does. \u00a0Why can we spend so much time and call for urgent responses after some tragedies, often well out of proportion\u00a0of the numbers, and yet like clockwork you can predict that Muslim extremist terrorist attacks will inevitably be followed by talk of numbers, proportion, perspective, and basic arithmetic?<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know the answer, I\u2019m curious. \u00a0So are Michael Dougherty<\/a> and\u00a0 Jonah Goldberg<\/a>. \u00a0Apparently I\u2019m not the only one thinking on it. \u00a0 Though I\u2019m not so much pointing it out\u00a0as I\u2019m curios why it\u2019s only this brand of terrorism that elicits\u00a0this response.<\/p>\n
