But for the wrong reason.\u00a0 Most who are posting\u00a0this story<\/a> are putting it under the banner \u2018Oh brother, insensitivity run amuck.\u2019\u00a0 Or something like it.\u00a0 The fact that a quote from MLK \u2013 perhaps the defining quote of his ministry \u2013 might have been taken down from the University of Oregon for not being inclusive enough has raised a couple eyebrows.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

But here is the thing.\u00a0 The quote:<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I have a dream\u2026\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

perhaps shouldn\u2019t be there.\u00a0 Not because it doesn\u2019t represent some new understanding of diversity \u2013 <\/p>\n

which I\u2019m sure it doesn\u2019t.\u00a0 \u2018Diversity\u2019 as explained and lived today seems to have little to do with what diversity was said to mean back when I was a lad. <\/p>\n

But perhaps it shouldn\u2019t be there\u00a0because right now in our country, the first and most important thing we seem to ask is \u2018Quick, what\u2019s the skin color of everyone involved?\u2019\u00a0 The answer then dictates just how much we should care, or if the media should cover it, or what the outcome should be.\u00a0 Think about it.\u00a0 What good is it to trumpet this quote as some prophetic utterance if we go around and act the way we do? <\/p>\n

If we are going to run about saying \u2018Not by the color of their skin, the color of their skin, the color of their skin\u2026\u2019, I expect that we won\u2019t, you know, judge everything and everyone first and foremost by the color of their skin.\u00a0\u00a0 If we insist on doing so, then perhaps we ought to stop jumping in front of each other to show how awesomely righteous we are by quoting this irrelevant phrase that we apparently have no intention of following.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
