At St. Vincent Academy in Newark, New Jersey, students learn more than just school subjects.\u00a0 \u201cLearning compassion is a major theme of our school,\u201d explains the administrative director, Sister June Favata, S.C.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must pay attention to the \u2018soul and heart\u2019 development of the young women who are students at our school,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n
Toward that end, the high school has a \u201cStudents-in-Community\u201d service program.\u00a0 In one activity, freshmen and sophomores welcomed more than 100 special education and special needs children for a festive \u201ccompassion\u201d carnival.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is about teaching them to be sensitive to other people\u2019s needs,\u201d Sister June explains.<\/p>\n
Each of us is called to compassion class every day.\u00a0 It\u2019s what\u2019s good for us\u2014and for our neighbor.<\/p>\n
