You may want to comfort a friend or loved one who\u2019s struggling with cancer, but you\u2019re not sure what exactly to say.<\/p>\n

Lori Hope, author of Help Me Live: 20 Things People with Cancer Want You to Know<\/em>, offers several suggestions:<\/p>\n

\u25aa Say \u201cI\u2019d like to ask how you\u2019re doing, but I don\u2019t want to bring it up if you don\u2019t want to talk about it.\u00a0 What would you prefer?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u25aa Ask, \u201cHow\u2019s it going?\u201d not \u201cHow are you feeling?\u201d\u00a0 That allows people to talk about their illness or to introduce a different topic to discuss, if they prefer.<\/p>\n

\u25aa Try, \u201cI\u2019m so sorry to hear about your cancer. Know that I\u2019ll be thinking of you.\u201d Or, \u201cI imagine you\u2019re feeling so many things right now. Please know that I\u2019m here to listen whenever you\u2019d like to talk about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u25aa If you do offer to help in some way, be specific.\u00a0 Say you\u2019ll bring dinner or baby-sit the children.<\/p>\n

In addition, be sure to always keep them in your prayers.<\/p>\n
