5. Did You Hear About The Girl Who . . . ?: Contemporary Legends, Folklore, and Human Sexuality by Mariamne H. Whatley and Elissa R. Henken

If you want to know how folklore and sex intersect, this is the book to read! (well, at least until I get some of my own published) The authors – a folklorist and a health educator – teamed up to collect folklore (mostly beliefs, slang, stories) about sex from young adults. This book presents the lore they’ve documented along with analysis for understanding it. Do I even need to list the reasons this book is awesome? It presents a snapshot of what young Americans believe about sex, and how these beliefs impact the efficacy (or lack thereof) of institutional sex ed. By reading this book, you’ll better understand why teen pregnancy and STI transmission rates continue to be high(ish), and you’ll walk away with a sense of how your own cultural context has influenced your views on sex.
