My five-year graduate school journey began at George Fox Evangelical Seminary (now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgefox.edu\/seminary\/index.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Portland Seminary<\/a>) and ended at the <a href=\"http:\/\/esr.earlham.edu\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Earlham School of Religion<\/a>. It was a challenging but wonderful experience.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"9k8h9-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9k8h9-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9k8h9-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"d8bl0-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"d8bl0-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"d8bl0-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">I went into seminary with the narrowly focused goal of going deep into the study of Quakerism. But, as often happens in an educational setting, one gets exposed to new ideas, and all kinds of rich avenues of inquiry open up. New worlds appear. It really is true that the more you learn the more you realize you don\u2019t know. It\u2019s humbling. It\u2019s thrilling. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"fu3uu-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"fu3uu-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fu3uu-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"1nh1g-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"1nh1g-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1nh1g-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">For all the book-reading and paper-writing and group-discussing and thesis-papering and theologizing, I can say without hesitation that the most profound, world-rocking, paradigm-shifting, life-altering thing I learned while in seminary was something very, very simple:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"9u8tu-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9u8tu-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9u8tu-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"fcf2t-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"fcf2t-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fcf2t-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">You are not your thoughts.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"42cbn-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"42cbn-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"42cbn-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"4qb8d-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"4qb8d-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4qb8d-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">I first encountered this statement in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/1115934.Thoughts_Matter\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">book<\/a> by a Benedictine nun named Sister Mary Margaret Funk. But then I encountered it again and again, expressed in various ways, by everyone from Christian mystics to <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/buddhism' target='_blank'>Buddhist<\/a> monks. From Jesus to Buddha. From the apostle Paul in the first century to Anglican Archbishop Rowan Williams in the twenty-first century. From Evagrius Ponticus in the fourth century to Thich Nhat Hanh in the twentieth century. From John Cassian to Pema Chodron. From the venerable abbas and ammas of the Egyptian desert to medieval Catholic saints to early Quakers to Zen masters to Hindus to Taoists to Sufis. This idea kept coming up. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"8ad92-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8ad92-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8ad92-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"911m0-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"911m0-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"911m0-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">You are not your thoughts.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"mkso-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"mkso-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"mkso-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"4htpe-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"4htpe-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4htpe-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">Recently, I heard this slightly unappetizing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upaya.org\/2017\/05\/stephen-batchelor-four-noble-truths-by-john-becvar\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">analogy<\/a>: Just as the liver and gall bladder produce bile, so the brain secretes thoughts. This occurs without any conscious effort on your part\u2013it just happens naturally. It\u2019s the way the organ functions. But just as you are not your bile, you are not your thoughts. Bile is necessary, thoughts are necessary\u2013but they aren\u2019t who you are.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"e9o6a-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"e9o6a-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"e9o6a-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"fftgf-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"fftgf-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"fftgf-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">This idea, when grasped experientially (through tried-and-true practices such as Christian contemplation and\/or Buddhist meditation), brings about a radical shift. You can step back and observe your thoughts. They aren\u2019t you; they are ephemeral mental events that appear, exist for a moment, and then dissipate. You can choose whether or not to engage a thought when it arises; whether to energize and embody it; or whether to just allow it to slip on by and disappear. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"6vaks-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"6vaks-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6vaks-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"342i1-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"342i1-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"342i1-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">There is within you what Episcopal priest Cynthia Bourgeault calls \u201ca mysterious chooser\u201d\u00a0<span data-offset-key=\"d8seq-0-0\">which is separate from your thoughts and deeper at the core of your being<\/span>. When you realize that this is so, it opens up a gap\u2013a space\u2013between you and your thoughts. And this gap allows you to decide how you will react (or not react) as you observe the stream of thoughts constantly flowing by. The ancient Christian desert monastics called this practice <em>nepsis<\/em>\u2013\u201cwatchfulness of thoughts.\u201d Once you realize you can do this, you can\u2019t unrealize it.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"9l1s8-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9l1s8-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9l1s8-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"8lrgh-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8lrgh-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8lrgh-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">You are not your thoughts.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"9fu49-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"9fu49-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9fu49-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"1qgct-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"1qgct-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1qgct-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">By developing this detached and watchful attitude to one\u2019s thoughts, one is no longer controlled by them; no longer tossed to and fro; no longer reacting and then wondering what the hell happened. <span data-offset-key=\"60isl-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">One begins to notice increasing levels of<\/span><\/span> patience, perspective, simplicity, equanimity, compassion, morality, transformation, and freedom. Of course, mastering this skill is a life-long process.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"7rcim-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"7rcim-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7rcim-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"4690t\" data-offset-key=\"8jsjj-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"8jsjj-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8jsjj-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">So there you go\u2026 You don\u2019t have to spend thousands of dollars and thousands of hours to get the most valuable lesson I learned in seminary.
