Decorative stonework surrounds the windows with vegetal elements of cherry trees, along with similarly decorated elements along the frieze.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last night, my wife and I attended the open house for the new Orem Utah Temple. \u00a0When it is dedicated, it will be <em>our<\/em> temple. \u00a0So I was pleased to see how pretty it is on the interior. \u00a0Particularly its carpets and its stained glass windows. \u00a0I\u2019ve been disappointed at being unable to volunteer for the open house, but our travel schedule of late has made it completely impossible.<\/p>\n<p>And, speaking of travel, we\u2019re off again in order to spend time with a grandchild. \u00a0(Part of the blessing or the curse of having a far-flung family is that we\u2019re obliged to travel great distances to see our grandkids.) \u00a0We were pleased, though, to run into Terryl and Fiona Givens in the Delta Airlines lounge at the Salt Lake Airport while we were waiting for our respective flights. \u00a0Which allowed for very pleasant conversation. \u00a0He has an extremely interesting writing project that\u2019s nearing completion.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80994\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80994\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2019\/12\/mexico-city-mexico-temple-7497-thumb.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-80994\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2019\/12\/mexico-city-mexico-temple-7497-thumb.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas in Mexico City\" width=\"300\" height=\"375\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80994\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christmas lights at the Mexico City Mexico Temple<br>(Image of unknown provenance; if there are copyright concerns, please contact me at daniel_peterson@byu.edu)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will now share a little bit more from \u201cComparing Near-Death Experiences and Shared Death Experiences: An Illuminating Contrast,\u201d\u00a0<em>Journal of Near-Death Studies<\/em>\u00a040\/21 (Summer 2022), 77-94.\u00a0 Authorship of the article is attributed to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharedcrossing.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>\u201cShared Crossing Research Initiative (SCRI),\u201d<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0a team of researchers based in Santa Barbara, California, but the principal authors appear to have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/remlab.religion.ucsb.edu\/people\/michael-kinsella\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Michael Kinsella<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharedcrossing.com\/about-founder-william-peters\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>William Peters<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both NDEs and SDEs are typically assumed by persons reporting them to be the results of a spirit or soul leaving the body \u2013 one\u2019s own spirit or soul in the case of NDEs and the soul or spirit of another in the case of SDEs.\u00a0 (90)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[I]t is important to keep in mind that a variety of features are unique to SDEs, such as remotely sensing a death from a distance and, most notably, encounters with another person in the process of dying.\u00a0 (90-91)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notwithstanding a few features unique to each experience [NDE and SDE], we observed a striking similarity in both phenomenological features and aftereffects of NDEs and SDEs that supports the idea that they are different perspectives of a singular phenomenon, namely the transition between physical and non-physical existence.\u00a0 (92)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NDEs are often characterized as a \u201cjourney to the light\u201d \u2013 in this sense, the light takes on a primary role as it is the presumed destination of the dying, though this journey is cut short for NDErs who return to tell their tale.\u00a0 In SDEs, people sometimes report seeing a dying loved one travel up through a tunnel and into the light, or they report seeing unaccounted-for light at some point during their experiences.\u00a0 With few exceptions, people reporting SDEs rarely describe the light as the main feature of their experience; rather, their attention is usually focused on a vision, a sensed presence, or thoughts of a dying person.\u00a0 Some SDErs even describe accompanying or assisting a dying loved one to the light.\u00a0 Given these similarities and differences, NDEs and SDEs both suggest that the person undergoing the experience is witnessing a direct relationship between the appearance of light and the dying process, with the dying individual moving toward or transitioning into the light.\u00a0 (91)<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to some of the SDErs we interviewed, the aspect of their experience identified as a life review consisted of either past moments in the life of the dying person or of past moments that they previously shared with the dying person.\u00a0 In cases of the former, these moments were reported to come not from personal memories but rather from some external agent.\u00a0 In these instances, SDErs reported witnessing past events of which they had no prior direct experience, and sometimes this revelation resulted in the SDEr gaining new insights into the lives of the dying. (91-92)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They discuss the \u201clife review,\u201d something well known from myriads of accounts of near-death-experiences, as it occurs in of the \u201cshared death experiences\u201d that are the principal focus of their research.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One type is illustrated by an experience related by Susan B., from shortly after the death of her boyfriend:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I received a phone call that my boyfriend had died.\u00a0 I was so distraught, so distraught, that after crying for hours, I finally fell asleep, but then I became aware \u2013 I would have to say aware \u2013 I became aware of a vision, and the vision was a tunnel kind of vision, and it was like images were all on top of each other and moving, and it was everything that he and I had ever done together was going on.\u00a0 I was aware of this image, and I looked at this image, and I knew it wasn\u2019t my life because it was just our life together, so in my mind I screamed, \u201cJohn\u2019s dead,\u201d at which point the image froze, and then it shattered like a piece of glass.\u00a0 I opened my eyes, I could still see the image, and bit by bit, piece by piece, the glass fell down, and as the image cleared, I could see the room.\u00a0 (86)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authors also describe another kind of life review, \u201cin which participants described having somehow acquired or having direct access to the private interior life of a dying person\u201d (86).\u00a0 An example to illustrate this comes from Jean D., who described an experience that she had shortly prior to the death of her father:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One day I was out weeding the yard, so I was just by myself, and all of a sudden, I saw a movie of [her father\u2019s] whole life.\u00a0 I\u2019m just by myself doing this weeding, see this movie, and I realize, \u201cOh my gosh, it\u2019s dad\u2019s life!\u201d\u00a0 When he was younger and he came back from the war, and different times in business, and when my brother was born.\u00a0 And I realized that I was seeing all the highlights of his life, the times when he was most proud.\u00a0 And I thought, \u201cWow, this is weird.\u00a0 This is really interesting.\u201d\u00a0 (86)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<\/p><p style=\"text-align: right;\">Posted from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 Last night, my wife and I attended the open house for the new Orem Utah Temple. \u00a0When it is dedicated, it will be our temple. \u00a0So I was pleased to see how pretty it is on the interior. \u00a0Particularly its carpets and its stained glass windows. \u00a0I\u2019ve been disappointed at being unable to [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1019,"featured_media":102875,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[5835,9394,900,903,36941,12827],"class_list":["post-102872","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-dying","tag-life-review","tag-nde","tag-near-death-experience","tag-sde","tag-shared-death-experience"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>The &quot;life review&quot;
