Some of the polymathic scientists and \u00a0litt\u00e9rateurs <\/span><\/span><\/em>over at the Peterson Obsession Board like to picture me as a gourmand and a foodie who waddles incessantly between high-end multiple-course meals. \u00a0That isn\u2019t actually me at all \u2014 last night, we had grated cheese on tortilla chips for dinner, whereas the previous two nights had been peanut butter and jam on fresh French bread \u2014 but they enjoy it so much that don\u2019t want to disappoint them. \u00a0In fact, I like to feed them a savory bone from to time. \u00a0So . . .<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As our flight was descending into the airport at L\u012bhu\u02bbe the other day, my wife \u00a0asked the teenage boy who was seated next to her \u2014 a native of Kaua\u2019i \u2014 to name his two favorite restaurants on the island. \u00a0He graciously responded by recommending the places where he most enjoys the food: \u00a0McDonalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken. \u00a0We chose not to act on his recommendation.<\/p>\n

The Interpreter Foundation website continues to be effectively moribund. \u00a0Today, for example, it posted just three new items:<\/p>\n

Nibley Lectures: Come, Follow Me<\/em> Book of Mormon Lesson 10: \u201cWe Rejoice in Christ\u201d (2 Nephi 20-25)<\/a><\/p>\n

During 1988, 1989, and 1990, Hugh Nibley taught Honors Book of Mormon classes for four semesters at Brigham Young University. The lectures were video-taped and audio cassettes and printed transcripts were made of the lectures. We believe these recordings will be interesting to listen to and valuable to your Come, Follow Me<\/em> study program this year. Each week, we will include the lectures covering the Book of Mormon chapters being studied that week.<\/p>\n

This week, we have lecture 20, covering 2 Nephi 25, The Jews and Jerusalem. [Nibley did not have any lectures covering chapters 10 through 24 of 2 Nephi]<\/p>\n

All 112 lectures are immediately available in PDF, audio, video, and electronic formats, as well as in paperback books that are available for purchase. But here\u2019s a hint: \u00a0The 11 February 2024 recording has been edited in order to remove extraneous commercial breaks and occasional oubreaks of lrish step dancing \u2014 something to which Terry Hutchinson is especially prone \u2014 or even outbreaks of John Gee\u2019s unexpected bursts into the enthusiastic jodeling that he has picked up during sojourns in the Berner Oberland regions of the Swiss Alps. \u00a0They are beautiful, but they can be distracting. \u00a0Matthew Bowen has occasionally sought to insert surfing videos into our programs, but they too would be a distraction from our deeply serious purpose of \u2014 if you believe the denizens of the Obsession Board \u2014 obfuscating, lying, distorting, misleading, and insulting.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I have done a reasonably good job of keeping up the pace of my writing during this trip. \u00a0Better, I think, than I\u2019ve ever done before. \u00a0My writing goal for this year has been to produce, each week, six thousand words of prose designed for immediate or eventual publication. (I don\u2019t count blogging toward my thousand words, of course. \u00a0I don\u2019t consider blogging \u201cpublication.\u201d) \u00a0Knowing that I would be scattered and jet-lagged and needing to shoulder various responsibilities for the tour that we were accompanying, I made a run at doing more than six thousand words during the weeks leading up to this trip. \u00a0And I did pretty well. \u00a0Further, I actually wrote some additional materials while I\u2019ve been, er, on the road (which is to say, largely on the water and in the air) \u00a0 \u00a0So I\u2019m feeling rather proud of myself at the moment.<\/p>\n

I have a lot of things that I want to get out there, and the clock is inexorably ticking. \u00a0So it\u2019s absolutely necessary that I pick up the pace. \u00a0As Omar Khayyam (AD 1048-1131) puts it or, at least, as he puts it in the creative translation of Edward FitzGerald (1809-1883),<\/p>\n
