In time the school will draw students from within and outside the United States.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n It seems that the Church and the University are, quite openly and shamelessly, determined to create more horrors for inclusion in the Christopher Hitchens Memorial \u201cHow Religion Poisons Everything\u201d File<\/em>\u2122.<\/p>\n \u201cA man filled with the love of God,\u201d Joseph Smith once threatened, \u201cis not content with blessing his family alone, but ranges through the whole world, anxious to bless the whole human race.\u201d<\/p>\n I expect, by the way, that the new Brigham Young University medical campus will be built on the site of the former Provo High School. \u00a0For a number of reasons \u2014 although it hasn\u2019t been announced and although I have somewhat less than zero insider information \u2014 that would seem to me to make perfect sense.<\/p>\n And, while we\u2019re talking about the Hitchens File<\/em>, here\u2019s another chilling abomination: \u00a0\u201cJustServe Volunteers Help Make Food Drives Successful:\u00a0Food drives care for those in need in Utah, Texas and Arizona.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n This article in the Deseret News<\/em> caught my attention a couple of days ago: \u00a0\u201cMeet \u2018the pope\u2019s astronomer\u2019 \u2014 an MIT-educated American who believes science needs religion:\u00a0\u2018Astronomy is a great way of getting to know God the creator,\u2019 says Guy Consolmagno, the Jesuit brother who leads the Vatican Observatory.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n Back in 2016, Brother Guy<\/a> was the keynote speaker at an Interpreter Foundation symposium on religion and science (and enjoyed dinner the night before with a number of us at the home of two generous neighbors of ours). \u00a0He was a very charming guest, and I loved his remarks at the symposium. \u00a0A video of his speech is available online: \u00a0\u201cConference Talks: Astronomy, God, and the Search for Elegance<\/em>\u201c<\/a>\u00a0 I heartily commend it to your attention.<\/p>\n I want to pick up one more passage for you from Alex A. \u00c1lvarez, Rodrigo Arriolo-Godoy, and Rams\u00e9s D\u2019Le\u00f3n, \u201cNear-Death Experiences, Post-Traumatic Stress, and Supernormal Abilities in a Latin American Sample,\u201d Journal for Near-Death Studies<\/em> 41\/1 (Spring 2023): 40-66. \u00a0I think it vitally important.<\/p>\n Some who reject accounts of near-death experiences \u2014 or who, at the very least, want to foreclose the possibility that they might reveal anything about a life beyond death \u2014 have insisted they are merely subjective phenomena in a dying or at least highly stressed brain, and that they reflect nothing more than the cultural features of the person experiencing them. \u00a0Here is some of what \u00c1lvarez, Arriolo-Godoy, and D\u2019Le\u00f3n have to say on that subject:<\/p>\n As far as we know, this retrospective study is one of a few to include an exclusively Spanish-speaking sample and the first to comprise mostly Mexicans. \u00a0Though most studies like this one have been carried out with people belonging to English-speaking Western countries, we still managed to find quite similar results . . . \u00a0 Several authors have pointed out that, given the universality of many features and aftereffects of NDEs worldwide, the most logical conclusion is that NDEs are not culture dependent. \u00a0Although we will reserve judgment regarding NDE features pending analysis in a later study of our participants\u2019 NDE narratives, we did detect certain aftereffects that are common to people from countries and cultures other than English-speaking, Western ones \u2014 particularly with regard to changes in beliefs and attitudes. \u00a0For example, researchers who studied NDErs from Aotearoa New Zealand \u2014 which includes a mixture of people from indigenous, Asian, Pacific, and European descent \u2014 and from Iran \u2014 which includes Shi\u2018ite Muslims \u2014 reported a decrease in fear of death, an increase in belief in an afterlife, more positive feelings and emotions, and better communications with other people and greater desire to help them. \u00a0Thus, our findings contribute to the notion that NDEs are a universal phenomenon with aftereffects that are similar in people all over the world, are mainly positive, and affect not only the NDErs themselves but also the people with whom they interact.
