My most recent article for *Meridian Magazine<\/em> has now gone up: \u00a0*\u201cThe Journey to the Earliest Book of Mormon Text: Royal Skousen\u2019s 36-year Project.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 I hope to see y9u on Saturday, 10 August 2024, between twelve o\u2019clock noon and 3 PM.<\/p>\n
I also hope that you will enjoy this new series of short video features from the Interpreter Foundation and that, if you do, you\u2019ll share them further. \u00a0Here is the latest, entitled \u201cOliver Cowdery was sincere\u201d and featuring the always-interesting Latter-day Saint historian Don Bradley:<\/p>\n
<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Coverage of the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a> in the news and in popular media is sometimes friendly and pleasant, often reflexively hostile, and at other times merely weird. \u00a0I offer here three recent and quite different examples:<\/p>\n<p><strong>(1)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So the Church announces that a new medical school will be launched at Brigham Young University, with a special focus \u2014 though, I presume, not <em>sole<\/em> focus \u2014 on the humanitarian issues that face the Church in its global mission. \u00a0Good news, right? \u00a0More trained people to treat injuries and fight diseases and promote human welfare. \u00a0Well, maybe, but first we have to think of \u201cproblems.\u201d \u00a0Will the new medical school vigorously pursue gender reassignment surgery? \u00a0Will it focus on the particular health problems faced by practicing homosexuals? \u00a0Will it regard abortion on demand as a central sacrament of the faith? \u00a0After all, these are the most important and urgent health changes facing the world today. \u00a0Consider this article, in <em>Newsweek<\/em>: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/mormon-medical-school-utah-byu-1932652\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cNew Mormon-Funded Medical School Raises Questions.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 (Please note, by the way, that the <em>Newsweek<\/em> reporter goes, for answers to her questions, to a Catholic medical ethicist at Georgetown University.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"article_pubTime\">But my attention was particularly caught by some of the letters from readers that followed the article, according to which degrees from BYU\u2019s medical school will be worthless because faith and medical science are incompatible and because BYU\u2019s medical training will focus mostly on \u201cmagical underwear,\u201d priesthood blessings, and the like, rather than on mainstream medical methodologies.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>This about a church that venerates a now-retired heart surgeon \u2014 Russell M. Nelson, M.D., Ph.D. \u2014 as its president and living prophet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(2)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And, of course, gender roles in the Church come in for particular, and often particularly indignant, attention. \u00a0Here are five recent articles on one specific iteration of the subject, drawn from widely disparate sources:<\/p>\n<p><em>Hindustani Times<\/em>: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/trending\/woman-hoping-for-greece-holiday-gets-egg-apron-as-birthday-gift-from-multimillionaire-husband-viral-video-101722048204680.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cViral video: Millionaire JetBlue heir gifts wife an egg apron for her birthday. She wanted Greek holiday\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The Times (of London)<\/em>: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/magazines\/the-sunday-times-magazine\/article\/meet-the-queen-of-the-trad-wives-and-her-eight-children-plfr50cgk\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cMeet the queen of the \u2018trad wives\u2019 (and her eight children): Hannah Neeleman, known to her nine million followers as Ballerina Farm, milks cows, gives birth without pain relief and breastfeeds at beauty pageants. Is this an empowering new model of womanhood \u2014 or a hammer blow for feminism?\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The negative judgment in the <em>Times<\/em> article above is palpable and pervasive. \u00a0Less so, I think, in this follow-up piece:<\/p>\n<p><em>The Times (of London)<\/em>: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/world\/us-world\/article\/my-day-with-the-trad-wife-queen-and-what-i-really-thought-of-her-qmbmmhkp8\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cMy day with the trad wife queen and what it taught me: An interview published last weekend with internet star Hannah Neeleman at her Utah home, Ballerina Farm, has sparked a global social media debate. Our writer, Megan Agnew, revisits her time with the mother of eight\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Deseret News<\/em>: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/utah\/2024\/08\/01\/who-is-ballerina-farm-hannah-neelman\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cBallerina Farm sets the record straight: \u2018We are co-parents, co-CEOs\u2019:\u00a0Hannah Neeleman responds to a viral article about her family, calling it \u2018an attack on my family and my marriage\u2019\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Some people apparently believe that women should be allowed to choose any path in life that they desire, entirely free of patriarchal oppression, but also that some paths deserve neither respect nor toleration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This seems somehow a bit different from the Walt Disney with which I grew up:<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Mail<\/em>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-13690711\/secret-lives-mormon-wives-utah-swinging-tiktok-stars.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cThe Secret Lives of Mormon Wives: Meet the sizzling Utah momfluencers behind scandalous new reality show about SWINGING TikTok stars\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Manchester Evening News<\/em>: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.news.yahoo.com\/viral-mormon-sex-scandal-went-165149913.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAANES4l_KsAONOvw19KZpG9idrkUUNv5ropEjPYifKaWA5OlDaPzkFVqVkjbylnfjntdjfsnTMF3jtHVc6Z0EJG027PaTFe-qpdMXIyMbwv0kj53m0Rcuy6HtAjvehBDVPh_o6QQ2--sF7euRgIuGib0FvE3kUXzZhg6laG1OFj_R\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cViral Mormon sex scandal which went viral on TikTok set for reality TV series\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 It seems, incidentally, that the viral scandal went viral<\/p>\n<p><em>Variety<\/em>: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/news\/the-secret-lives-of-mormon-wives-swinging-sex-scandal-hulu-1236088947\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201c\u2018The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives\u2019 Chronicles Swinging Sex Scandal in New Hulu Series\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<div><em>Salt Lake Tribune<\/em>: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/artsliving\/2024\/08\/01\/criticism-starting-over-mormon\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cCriticism starting over \u2018Mormon Wives\u2019 TV series, before anyone has seen it: \u00a0The Hulu documentary series profiles Latter-day Saint mom influencers, and the scandal that made news worldwide.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 Golly. \u00a0Why isn\u2019t everybody just pleased as punch by this important new work of art? \u00a0It promises \u2014 don\u2019t you imagine? \u2014 a rich experience of moral and religious reflection.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_95872\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95872\" style=\"width: 488px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2022\/07\/Depoe_Bay_Area_Lincoln_County_Oregon_scenic_images_lincD0014a.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-95872\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2022\/07\/Depoe_Bay_Area_Lincoln_County_Oregon_scenic_images_lincD0014a.jpg\" alt=\"sdjfoahdsjanfoaij\" width=\"488\" height=\"324\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-95872\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">We\u2019re staying a little bit north of this inlet at Depoe Bay, Oregon. \u00a0(Wikimedia Commons public domain photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Well, we took a break from our daily routine of reading, writing, walking along the cliff\u2019s edge, and looking out at the ocean to go for a whale-watching cruise out of the tiny harbor of Depoe Bay. \u00a0It is, after all, <i lang=\"de\">Schweizer Bundesfeiertag\u00a0<\/i>(Swiss National Day), so \u2014 for that and another reason \u2014 the day seemed well worth celebrating.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>There is a resident pod of whales just off the coast here, and we\u2019ve actually seen them from our condo here on previous stays. \u00a0Apparently, however, the whales have been curiously shy for the past couple of weeks or longer, although I did see at least one and probably two while out for a stroll yesterday afternoon. \u00a0There were reputedly two that had been located this morning, although we saw only one, pretty much right outside of the entrance to the Bay. \u00a0We watched it for quite a while and then headed north in quest of the second. \u00a0But we never found it, so we returned and watched the first one again. \u00a0I also spotted a seal, and others saw a large jellyfish.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>My wife and I enjoy watching whales but, most of all, we simply enjoy being out on the ocean. \u00a0And the weather earlier today was spectacular, so we were pretty satisfied.. And afterwards \u2014 this is sure to send some of my critics into a meltdown of lament and indignation \u2014 we enjoyed our second meal of the trip at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tidalraves.com\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Tidal Raves<\/a>, which offers magnificent views of the sea and the Bay along with wonderful (sea)food. \u00a0The clam chowder wasn\u2019t my favorite, but the bread was really good, the Dungeness crab cakes were the best we\u2019ve tasted, and the main dishes were all extremely good. \u00a0(Between us, on the two days, we enjoyed \u2014 and shared \u2014 their herb-crusted local rockfish, their cioppino, their green curry, and their special local halibut dish.) \u00a0Even their ice water \u2014 I\u2019m not joking \u2014 was really cold and unusually good. \u00a0I recommend them if you\u2019re ever passing through these parts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Posted from Depoe Bay, Oregon<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 My most recent article for Meridian Magazine has now gone up: \u00a0\u201cThe Journey to the Earliest Book of Mormon Text: Royal Skousen\u2019s 36-year Project.\u201d\u00a0 I hope to see y9u on Saturday, 10 August 2024, between twelve o\u2019clock noon and 3 PM.
