My wife is there at this very moment. \u00a0(Photo from the Hale Centre Theatre website)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nI suspect that Brigham Young\u2019s tastes in theater may have been more overtly didactic than mine are, and we certainly disagree on his distaste for tragedies, but I\u2019m certainly grateful that he gave such strong support to drama from the very earliest days of Latter-day Saint settlement in Utah. \u00a0(So, too, is my wife, the theater major, who \u2014 I opted not to go, having several things to do \u2014 is out with a friend to a play as I type.)<\/p>\n\u201cIf I were placed on a cannibal island and given a task of civilizing its people,\u201d Brigham is said to have remarked, \u201cI should straightway build a theatre.\u201d<\/p>\nAnd, very plainly, history and his actions bear him out on that claim. \u00a0Soon after they arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847, the Latter-day Saints erected a temporary shelter made from tree boughs on a frame structure that came to be called \u201cThe Bowery.\u201d \u00a0It stood on the southeast corner of what we now know as Temple Square. \u00a0The forerunner of the Tabernacle, it was used for religious services \u2014 but also for concerts, plays, and dances.<\/p>\nIn 1853, not much more than five years after the arrival of the Mormon pioneers in the valley, Salt Lake City\u2019s Social Hall was formally dedicated. \u00a0The non-LDS lawyer and federal territorial official Benjamin G. Ferris (1802-1891), a native of New York who was no friend to the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a>, compared the theatrical performances held there favorably to dramatic presentations along the eastern seaboard.<\/p>\nThereafter, in 1862, Brigham Young dedicated the Salt Lake Theatre, which was one of the finest theater buildings of its time anywhere in the United States. \u00a0Said he,<\/p>\n<blockquote>Upon the stage of a theater can be represented in character, evil and its consequences, good and its happy results and rewards; the weakness and the follies of man, the magnanimity of virtue and the greatness of truth. The stage can be made to aid the pulpit in impressing upon the minds of a community an enlightened sense of a virtuous life, also a proper horror of the enormity of sin and a just dread of its consequences. The path of sin with its thorns and pitfalls, its gins and snares can be revealed, and how to shun it (Discourses of Brigham Young,<\/em> 243).<\/p><\/blockquote>\nI\u2019m confident that Brother Brigham would have loved film, too, and that he would have seen its enormous potential power for good.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19128\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19128\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/03\/800px-Dust_Bowl_-_Dallas_South_Dakota_1936.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-19128\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/03\/800px-Dust_Bowl_-_Dallas_South_Dakota_1936.jpg\" alt=\"Dust bowl.\" width=\"596\" height=\"447\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19128\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">America\u2019s elites once viewed the country\u2019s Christians as silly but essentially harmless, and the territories in which they were dominant as mere cultural and intellectual wastelands. But that benign view, represented by the photo above, has now been replaced by a more ominous perspective that regards them as a dangerous threat. \u00a0(Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nI try not to let too much time go by between offerings taken from the Christopher Hitchens Memorial \u201cHow Religion Poisons Everything\u201d File<\/em>\u2122. \u00a0I know how much these specimens of theistic atrocity mean to some folks, and how much they depend upon such horrors to keep their anti-theistic indignation aflame. \u00a0Here\u2019s a new case that, I think, should serve the purpose: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org\/article\/honduras-hospitals-receive-two-major-donations-from-the-church-of-jesus-christ\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cHonduras Hospitals Receive Two Major Donations From the Church of Jesus Christ.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\u00a0 Gerrit Dirkmaat is featured in a new super-short video from the Interpreter Foundation entitled \u201cThe Faith of the Whitmers.\u201d \u00a0If you like it, share it!
