There was also opposition to the construction of the Bern Switzerland Temple, which is depicted here, back in the 1950s. \u00a0(I hope this constitutes \u201cfair use\u201d of the image.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Efforts by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to build new temples have run into a number of problems in the past couple of years from neighborhood opposition (in Las Vegas, Nevada, for example, and even in Tooele and Heber Valley, Utah). \u00a0The most egregious recent cases have been in <a href=\"https:\/\/churchofjesuschristtemples.org\/cody-wyoming-temple\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cody, Wyoming<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/churchofjesuschristtemples.org\/mckinney-texas-temple\/news\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">McKinney (Fairview), Texas<\/a>, where the groundbreaking for both temples has, thus far, been completely blocked. \u00a0And, of course, some critics of the Church have rejoiced in this, essentially saying that the Church deserves such a response since it has been attempting to bully decent neighborhoods into permitting it to construct such monstrosities in their midst. \u00a0With all that in mind, I was pleased to see this letter in today\u2019s edition of the <em>Dallas Morning News<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"body-text-header\">\u201cLDS temple a good neighbor\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Re: \u201cCouncil denies permit for proposed temple \u2014 Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can offer a revised design at any time,\u201d Thursday Metro &amp; Business story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">I was surprised to read of the Fairview controversy regarding the proposed McKinney Mormon temple. We live very close to the North Dallas temple and are proud and happy to have it in our neighborhood. Concerns about lighting and traffic are misplaced. We have had no problems with either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">We often point the temple out to visitors because of its attractiveness. The last sentence of today\u2019s article, \u201cbuild it at 42 feet,\u201d I assume refers to the height of the steeple. The temple steeple in our neighborhood is approximately 80 feet tall and to my eyes is a thing of beauty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">I am not a Mormon but I have no objection with Moroni, who sits atop the steeple keeping watch over our neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><i>David Haymes, North Dallas<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m glad that Mr. Haymes has enjoyed having the Dallas Texas Temple in his community. \u00a0I would think that, for the most part, places where temples have been built have found them to be assets to their neighborhoods. \u00a0Latter-day Saint temples are beautiful and quiet and immaculately maintained, and their grounds are always well laid out and exceptionally well cared for. \u00a0I\u2019m told that the San Diego California Temple, for one \u2014 and there are probably others \u2014 has become a popular location for wedding photographers, even when the prospective husband and wife are neither headed for a temple marriage nor even Latter-day Saints.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_62800\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62800\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2018\/07\/photo_contest_morning_reflections_newport_beach_temple.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-62800\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2018\/07\/photo_contest_morning_reflections_newport_beach_temple.jpg\" alt=\"Newport Beach's first temple\" width=\"597\" height=\"398\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-62800\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Newport Beach California Temple, the first temple to be constructed in California\u2019s Orange County, is just a few minutes\u2019 drive from where we typically stay when we\u2019re in the area. (LDS Media Library)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Newport Beach California Temple was the object of quite fierce opposition from certain segments of the community (and, I suspect, from more than a few outsiders to the community), and its spire and color and lighting had to be adjusted to meet some of the objections.<\/p>\n<p>Happily \u2014 I followed the comments on the petition against permitting the temple to be built in Newport Beach \u2014 some of those who opposed it overtly and expressly declared that Latter-day Saints weren\u2019t welcome in the community and stated explicitly religious objections. \u00a0That was a serious mistake on their part, although some probably just couldn\u2019t help themselves: \u00a0No city council or zoning commission in the United States would <em>dare<\/em> to block the construction of a place of worship on expressly theological grounds.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21987\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21987\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/07\/800px-Grant_Wood_-_American_Gothic_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-21987\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/07\/800px-Grant_Wood_-_American_Gothic_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg\" alt=\"American Gothic, by Grant Wood\" width=\"597\" height=\"720\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21987\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Despite appearances, Grant Wood\u2019s \u201cAmerican Gothic\u201d (1929) didn\u2019t actually use Hannah Neeleman and her husband, Daniel, as his models for this famous painting. \u00a0(Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A while back, I called attention here to an obnoxious and patently contemptuous article in <em>The Times<\/em> (of London) about a young Latter-day Saint wife and mother (by the name of Hannah Neeleman) and her family. \u00a0(See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2024\/08\/the-church-in-recent-media.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Church in Recent Media,\u201d<\/a> along with some follow-up comments in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2024\/08\/on-judgment.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cOn Judgment.\u201d<\/a>)\u00a0 Others have responded to that <em>Times<\/em> article, as well. \u00a0Here, for instance, is a piece by Amanda Freebairn that I appreciated: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/latterdaysaintmag.com\/in-defense-of-the-trad-wife-influencer\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cIn Defense of the Trad Wife Influencer.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Yet another very short video feature has just been posted by the Interpreter Foundation. \u00a0It\u2019s entitled \u201cThe Most Profound Experience.\u201d \u00a0It focuses on David Whitmer, one of the Three Witnesses to the Book of Mormon, and it features the irreplaceable independent Latter-day Saint historian Don Bradley.
