Bradshaw, and an unidentified interloper who apparently wandered in from the street in a desperate search for human contact.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nI\u2019m saddened to have heard the news this morning of the passing of my longtime friend and associate <a href=\"https:\/\/interpreterfoundation.org\/author\/george\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">George Mitton<\/a>. \u00a0He was an associate editor of the old FARMS Review<\/em> before it was terminated in a palace coup at the Maxwell Institute and, after that unpleasant episode, was involved with the Interpreter Foundation from its very beginning. \u00a0He has been serving on our book review committee, and I received a note from the chairman of that committee in response to the news of his passing: \u00a0\u201cJust last week I received an email from him with feedback on a book review. He was contributing to the kingdom right up to the end. You can probably pick out the soloist for that tour, Ewan Harbrecht. \u00a0(Wikimedia Commons public domain photograph)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nMy wife and I also had the good fortune to have known George\u2019s remarkable wife, <a href=\"https:\/\/nelsonmortuary.com\/obituaries\/ewan-mitton\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ewan Harbrecht Mitton<\/a>, whom some may perhaps recall from her mention in the account, given in the third volume of Saints<\/em>, of the Tabernacle Choir\u2019s 1955 European tour. \u00a0She was the soloist for the Choir during that historic visit, which was undertaken at least in part to celebrate the dedication of the temple in Zollikofen, Switzerland, the long-dreamed-of first Latter-day Saint temple in Europe.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_105086\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-105086\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2024\/05\/Joseph-Smith-and-Our-Preparation.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-105086\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2024\/05\/Joseph-Smith-and-Our-Preparation.jpg\" alt=\".,sdfms.,f.s\" width=\"200\" height=\"302\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-105086\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cover of a recent book from the Interpreter Foundation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nGeorge \u00a0was soft-spoken, kind, funny, incisive, hard-working, and deeply loyal to the Kingdom of God. \u00a0We\u2019ll sorely miss him, but we\u2019re happy for him at the same time. \u00a0As one of the members of our Interpreter board put it, \u201cHe will be with Ewan again. He was a great contributor and thinker.\u201d \u00a0He is a classic illustration of the principle of \u201cenduring to the end.\u201d<\/p>\nI\u2019m very happy, too, that we got <a href=\"https:\/\/interpreterfoundation.org\/books\/joseph-smith-and-our-preparation-for-the-lords-final-judgment\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a book of his essays<\/a> out in time, and that we were able to present it to him at a small celebration in his honor on 10 May 2024. \u00a0(The book\u2019s overall theme \u2014 \u201cfour significant articles that offer much guidance for our preparation to meet the Lord at the veil\u201d \u2014 is exceptionally appropriate to his own passing.) \u00a0I\u2019m grateful to all who made the book and the event happen.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44710\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44710\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/10\/jerusalem-center-byu-1316213-gallery-2.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-44710\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/10\/jerusalem-center-byu-1316213-gallery-2.jpg\" alt=\"BYU JC IL klsdfajksflkas\" width=\"597\" height=\"400\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44710\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">S. Kent Brown eventually served as the director of BYU\u2019s Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies, but it had not yet been built when he first led a semester-abroad group there (and when I first lived in the city). \u00a0Photo from the LDS Media Library.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nMy wife and I drove up with Kent and Gayle Brown on Saturday evening for a reunion of the January-June 1978 BYU Israel semester-abroad program in which I participated. \u00a0It was my first time in the Middle East. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journal.interpreterfoundation.org\/author\/kentb\/?journal\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Kent<\/a> was the faculty director of that program, which occurred when BYU\u2019s eventual Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies was just beginning to be a topic of serious discussion.<\/p>\nThanks to the efforts, I think, of a pair of sisters who were on the program, they have been doing these reunions pretty regularly for quite a while. \u00a0But \u2014 owing to periods spent living in California and Egypt and Israel, as well as a hectic summer travel schedule and, of course, my own toxic, unpleasant, and anti-social personality \u2014 I think that we\u2019ve only previously managed to attend one of them. \u00a0And that was quite a while back.<\/p>\nIt was fun to renew acquaintances and to catch up. \u00a0Two of that group are, alas, no longer with us, but most of the others came. \u00a0I think a lot of such reunions. \u00a0I don\u2019t want to overdo it, but they seem to me at least a minor foretaste of the glorious heavenly reunions promised by the Gospel.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36556\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36556\" style=\"width: 429px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/09\/Brooklyn_Museum_-_The_Blind_of_Capernaum_Les_aveugles_de_Capharnum_-_James_Tissot_-_overall.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36556\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/09\/Brooklyn_Museum_-_The_Blind_of_Capernaum_Les_aveugles_de_Capharnum_-_James_Tissot_-_overall.jpg\" alt=\"J.-J, Tissot, Jesus healing a blind man\" width=\"429\" height=\"768\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36556\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jesus heals a blind man.
