Michael Quinn wrote, has often been overlooked:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the recurring themes in non-Mormon biographies of President Brigham Young is the idea that he was not a very \u201cspiritual\u201d man. Such interpretations, however, not only misrepresent his character, they also totally disregard the evidence, both published and unpublished, that refutes such a stereotype.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the day when Brigham first met the Prophet Joseph in November 1832, he surprised those he was with by <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/pentecostal' target='_blank'>speaking in tongues<\/a>. \u00a0We will show this. \u00a0And that wasn\u2019t the first time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We will also illustrate his absolute faithfulness and commitment to the Prophet Joseph Smith:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is quite evident that after 1832 Brigham Young was moved by one motive: Determination to obey the will of God as spoken thru the Prophet, and to support that Prophet with all that he possessed of time, talent, and means.<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/F3F46A09-ABB0-4EAA-8C00-1A99C5F0701E#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An example of this that we don\u2019t include in the movie<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One time the Prophet Joseph Smith severely rebuked Brigham Young. After the Prophet\u2019s chastisement, everyone in the room waited for Brigham\u2019s response. He could have defended himself or been offended, but his reply was sincerely and simply, \u201cJoseph, what do you want me to do?\u201d<a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/F3F46A09-ABB0-4EAA-8C00-1A99C5F0701E#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As Irving Stone observes in his book <em>Men to Match My Mountains, <\/em>\u00a0even the layout of Salt Lake City embodies Brigham\u2019s fidelity to the Prophet:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Following Joseph Smith\u2019s original design Young, the city planner, decreed that the streets were to be laid out enormously wide, each house set back so many feet, the fronts to be beautified with fruit trees and gardens; and four public squares of ten acres laid out in various parts of the city for public grounds.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following is an excerpt from a dream that Brigham Young related to the Quorum of the Twelve on 17 February 1847, as recorded in his own handwriting and creative spelling:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I took him by the right hand and kist him meney times he looked perfically natureal, I asked him why it was that we could not be together as we used to live he had ben from us a long time and we wanted his Society and I due not like to be Seprated from him. he rose up from his chair looked at me with an ernest and plesent countenece, Spoak in his usual way [\u201c]it is all right.[\u201c] I then Said to him [\u201c]I due not like to be a way from you.[\u201c] [\u201c]it is wright[,\u201d] he replied [\u201c]we cannot be together yet we Shall by en by but you will have to due with out me a while and then we Shall be together again.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 29 August 1877 Brigham Young lay on his deathbed. His last words were: \u201cJoseph! Joseph! Joseph!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Did Joseph come for him? \u00a0I strongly suspect that he did. \u00a0In any case, it\u2019s such evidence of Brigham\u2019s devotion and loyalty to Joseph that makes it impossible for me to regard accusations that Brigham orchestrated the murder of Joseph and Hyrum Smith as anything other than offensive and, in fact, downright obscene. \u00a0The real Brigham Young of history would never, ever, worlds without end, have lifted his hand against the man whom he venerated as the anointed of the Lord.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/F3F46A09-ABB0-4EAA-8C00-1A99C5F0701E#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[1]<\/a> Eugene England, <em>Brother Brigham<\/em> (Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1980), 14.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"applewebdata:\/\/F3F46A09-ABB0-4EAA-8C00-1A99C5F0701E#_ftnref2\" name=\"_ftn2\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">[2]<\/a> S. The Harvard Bridge is at the bottom right.<br>(Wikimedia Commons public domain photo by Nick Allen)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I close with an item from Jeff Jacoby at the <em>Boston Globe<\/em> \u2014 a fundamentalist and theocratic rag if ever there was one! \u2014 that has obviously been drawn from the <em>Christopher Hitchens Memorial \u201cHow Religion Poisons Everything\u201d File<\/em>\u2122: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2024\/08\/28\/opinion\/religion-charities-volunteer\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cReligion is America\u2019s mighty engine of charitable goodness:\u00a0The federal government rightly characterizes faith-based organizations as \u2018the bedrock of our society.\u2019\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 If you can make it past the disgusting pro-religious propaganda, though, there is good news:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cReligious \u201cnones,\u201d as demographers call them, are markedly less likely to donate to charity or to volunteer their time than other Americans. None of us should be surprised that the dwindling of religion has been accompanied by a decline in charitable giving.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, there is hope for the future! \u00a0Imagine there\u2019s no heaven. \u00a0(It\u2019s easy, if you try. \u00a0No hell below us;
