Richins, who was traveling with him)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here\u2019s some really good news: \u00a0A number of Cinemark theaters \u2014 in, I believe, Orem, Provo, American Fork, Draper, Midvale, Farmington, West Jordan, and Salt Lake City \u2014 will be running sneak previews of <em>Six Days in August<\/em> on the evening of Thursday, 26 September. \u00a0 That\u2019s next week. \u00a0Tickets for these special screenings are already on sale <em>right now<\/em>: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinemark.com\/movies\/six-days-in-august-early-access?showDate=2024-09-26&amp;fbclid=IwY2xjawFZNFlleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHTSnJTH5WiyrScOaTgpYo5_cUCR0TvU9IxU5DQy6CmbyfAlBIim9TgxzJw_aem_wFCG2h9s4Zhb7RDcenYcBw\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Six Days in August<\/em> \u2013 Early Access<\/a>. \u00a0Click on <em>Thurs 9\/26<\/em> and then click on the <em>7:00pm<\/em> button, and you will see a seating chart.<\/p>\n<p>Also: A new article of mine has just gone up in <em>Meridian Magazine<\/em>: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/latterdaysaintmag.com\/a-presidential-divide-the-fight-over-wholl-be-next\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cA Presidential Divide: The Fight over Who\u2019ll Be Next.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 It\u2019s probably not about what you might <em>think<\/em> it\u2019s about.<\/p>\n<p>And, once again, don\u2019t forget about next Wednesday\u2019s major event: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/interpreterfoundation.org\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201c<em>Six Days in August<\/em> Fireside at the SCERA Center for the Arts\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31742\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31742\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/03\/800px-Bozos_Circus_postcard_1960s.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-31742\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/03\/800px-Bozos_Circus_postcard_1960s.jpg\" alt=\"Bozo, elephant, and other characters\" width=\"597\" height=\"376\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A representative group of typical Americans during the first half of the 1960s? \u00a0Bozo the Clown, with abundant red hair and four friends, in 1963. \u00a0(Wikimedia Commons public domain photograph)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I\u2019m sorry to clutter up my blog with further attention to the Hulu miniseries <em>The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives<\/em>, but articles about the wretched thing keep clogging my news feed, and sometimes I relent and read one or two of them. \u00a0These two purported to be more seriouser than most of the usual entertainment coverage so . . . \u00a0well, I admit that I looked at them. \u00a0And they\u2019re pretty discouraging. \u00a0I was hoping, from its title, that the second article \u2014 from the student newspaper at the University of Pittsburgh, in the general vicinity of which <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org\/article\/elder-dieter-f-uchtdorf-dedicates-pittsburgh-pennsylvania-temple\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a new temple was dedicated<\/a> just this past weekend \u2014 might register some reservations about the show and about the chosen lifestyles of its stars. \u00a0And, to some extent, it did. \u00a0But by far its most severe condemnation was aimed at the church that has victimized those stars, and against whose oppressive strictures and teachings these noble and idealistic young women are heroically struggling.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Slate<\/em>: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/life\/2024\/09\/secret-lives-mormon-wives-episodes-taylor-cast.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cTheir Not-So-Secret Lives: The Hulu reality show that\u2019s exposing the biggest debates in Mormon life today.\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<em>Secret Lives<\/em> has . . . prompted a debate about contemporary <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Mormonism<\/a> and whether the mainstream church\u2019s central bureaucracy and its most vocal followers can and should be able to control what it means to be Mormon. . . .<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSecret Lives <\/em>offers a window into the sometimes messy lives of people who are active members of the mainstream church, at a time when its fundamental teachings are less and less mainstream. If it took the salacious tale of #MomTok swingers to get us here, so be it. . . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the eight-episode first season, which is all available on Hulu as of Sept. 6, reveals that they have each deviated from the standard Mormon path in their own way, and that they see their participation in #MomTok as an avenue to make a statement against traditional Mormon gender roles. . . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Secret Lives<\/em> is most interesting when the groups unite to defend the women against Mormon patriarchy . . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can see why church leaders may find the show disturbing. Despite its glossy overproduction and its unfulfilled promises to reveal sexy secrets about swingers, <em>Secret Lives<\/em>succeeds in telling other true stories. One of them is the ancient, familiar narrative of religious people who \u201csin\u201d despite being commanded not to. But more vitally, <em>Secret Lives<\/em>, in all its gossipy glory, puts its finger on unresolved conflicts within the LDS faith about marriage and gender roles. It\u2019s one thing to hear that the nationwide rise in women\u2019s involvement in paid work is challenging the church\u2019s teachings about men as providers and presiders over the family, or that a world increasingly comfortable with consensual sexual exploration is in conflict with a church that teaches that this will inevitably lead to heartache. It\u2019s another thing to see these fights play out in public\u2014TikTok by TikTok, comment by comment\u2014thanks to a generation of Mormon women happy to share that messiness with the <span class=\"slate-paragraph--tombstone\">world.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"byline-name\">Ryleigh Lord<\/span>, <span class=\"byline-job\">Editor-in-Chief, <em>The Pitt Review<\/em>: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pittnews.com\/article\/189800\/arts-and-entertainment\/the-secret-lives-of-mormon-wives-is-the-bleakest-show-on-television\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cThe Secret Lives of Mormon Wives\u201d is the bleakest show on television\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis is a show actively shedding light on the emotional manipulation, abuse and humiliation that women in the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Mormon church<\/a> are subjected to day in and day out. . . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery single \u201cMormon wife\u201d on this show is a business woman. They are all the primary breadwinners in their relationships, and still they are relegated to being \u201cMormon Wives\u201d <i>in the title of their own show<\/i>. This is the life that their society and religion wants them to fit into, and it is admirable and heartbreaking to watch them all try to break out of that jail . . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe show is feminist \u2014 there\u2019s no doubt about that. Everyone featured is pursuing some form of a progressive Mormon life, but it is a tragedy that the bar is so low and that only in the year 2024 are \u201cMormon wives\u201d starting to assert their own power and influence. The production team does a surprisingly good job of showing the audience just how backwards so much of this show is, but even that doesn\u2019t feel like enough to justify watching these women act as direct products of their environment . . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the only life young Mormon girls are shown while growing up, and I can\u2019t help but imagine the lives these incredibly intelligent and savvy women could have had if given the opportunity to be their own person during their 20s.<\/p>\n<div class=\"adredux after-para-secondlast aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"adbox\">\u201cI hope this show is a wake-up call for both the audience and the people featured in it \u2014 why is anyone getting satisfaction from watching such clear misogyny . . . ?\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I dunno. \u00a0Can anything be done about such things? \u00a0Is there any real way that Latter-day Saints can counter the kind of misunderstanding that flourishes among people who think that they\u2019ve learned all they need to know about us, our community, and our faith from watching a few episodes of <em>Big Love<\/em>, <em>Under the Banner of Heaven<\/em>, <em>The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City<\/em>, and <em>The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>Many years ago, my wife went \u2014 alone, unsupervised, and unescorted by me! \u2014 to a performance on Broadway of <em>Angels in America: Perestroika<\/em>, the second part of Tony Kushner\u2019s overall multiple-award-winning play <i>Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes<\/i>. \u00a0Latter-day Saints occupy a central and unenviable place in Kushner\u2019s story. During the intermission, an obviously Jewish man seated next to her (he was wearing a <em>yarmulke<\/em>) turned to her and asked \u201cHave you ever been to Salt Lake City?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Without waiting for her to answer his question, he said, obviously referring to Latter-day Saints in Utah, \u201cThey\u2019re just <em>like<\/em> that!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When she told me about the incident that evening back in Princeton, I was glad that I hadn\u2019t been there at the theater.
