{"id":108710,"date":"2025-01-16T15:03:29","date_gmt":"2025-01-16T22:03:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/?p=108710"},"modified":"2025-01-16T21:35:30","modified_gmt":"2025-01-17T04:35:30","slug":"strolling-on-the-ice-floes-of-galilee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2025\/01\/strolling-on-the-ice-floes-of-galilee.html","title":{"rendered":"Strolling on the ice floes of the Galilee?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_108713\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108713\" style=\"width: 509px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/01\/81tcJC6T3L._SL1500_-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-108713\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/01\/81tcJC6T3L._SL1500_-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"I like it a lot\" width=\"509\" height=\"768\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-108713\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cover of Dr. Pitre\u2019s new book<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I\u2019ve just begun reading a new book by the Catholic New Testament scholar Brant Pitre, entitled <em>Jesus and Divine Christology<\/em> (Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 2024). \u00a0Thus far, I like it very much and find it quite persuasive. \u00a0I\u2019ll write later, probably in a column, about his overall argument. \u00a0Right now, though, I would like to share some amusing examples that he mentions of efforts to dispense with the purported miracle of Jesus walking on the water. \u00a0The most obvious way of getting rid of the miracle is simply to dismiss it as fiction, a later hagiographic invention. \u00a0Dr. Pitre responds to such dismissals quite well, I think. \u00a0But I\u2019m more entertained by efforts to take the story more or less as is and <em>then<\/em> to explain it away.<\/p>\n<p>The account is given in two of the synoptic gospels, as well as in the gospel of John. \u00a0Here is Matthew 14:22-27, as it reads in the New International Version:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"text Matt-14-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-23621\" class=\"text Matt-14-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone,<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-23622\" class=\"text Matt-14-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-23623\" class=\"text Matt-14-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25\u00a0<\/sup>Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-23624\" class=\"text Matt-14-26\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26\u00a0<\/sup>When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. \u201cIt\u2019s a ghost,\u201dthey said, and cried out in fear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-23625\" class=\"text Matt-14-27\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27\u00a0<\/sup>But Jesus immediately said to them: <span class=\"woj\">\u201cTake courage! It is I. Don\u2019t be afraid.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here is it as given in Mark 6:45-51 (NIV):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"text Mark-6-45\"><sup class=\"versenum\">45\u00a0<\/sup>Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-24454\" class=\"text Mark-6-46\"><sup class=\"versenum\">46\u00a0<\/sup>After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-24455\" class=\"text Mark-6-47\"><sup class=\"versenum\">47\u00a0<\/sup>Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-24456\" class=\"text Mark-6-48\"><sup class=\"versenum\">48\u00a0<\/sup>He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them,<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-24457\" class=\"text Mark-6-49\"><sup class=\"versenum\">49\u00a0<\/sup>but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out,<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-24458\" class=\"text Mark-6-50\"><sup class=\"versenum\">50\u00a0<\/sup>because they all saw him and were terrified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Mark-6-50\">Immediately he spoke to them and said, <span class=\"woj\">\u201cTake courage! It is I. Don\u2019t be afraid.\u201d<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-24459\" class=\"text Mark-6-51\"><sup class=\"versenum\">51\u00a0<\/sup>Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And, lastly, this is how the story reads in the NIV translation of John 6:16-21:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"text John-6-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26275\" class=\"text John-6-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26276\" class=\"text John-6-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26277\" class=\"text John-6-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-26278\" class=\"text John-6-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>But he said to them, <span class=\"woj\">\u201cIt is I; don\u2019t be afraid.\u201d<\/span><\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-26279\" class=\"text John-6-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It has been suggested, Pitre says (on page 67, with footnoted sources), that Jesus was walking \u201con a great floating raft,\u201d or \u201cwading through the surf near the hidden shore,\u201d or \u201cwalking on the very edge of the sea (or in the shallows).\u201d \u00a0Or, perhaps, he \u201cwas on the land but the surface was obscured by a low mist that looked like the sea.\u201d \u00a0\u201cPerhaps he knew where there were submerged rocks,\u201d or was \u201cwalking on a log or concealed sandbar.\u201d \u00a0Best of all, maybe \u201cJesus walked on \u2018ice floes\u2019 (!) \u2014 a theory that was seriously suggested back in 2006 by scientists claiming that \u2018Palestine had at least two extended cold periods in ancient times, which would have made it possible for water to freeze near the shore'\u201d (48).<\/p>\n<p>But, if one is intending to reject the testimony of the primary sources \u2014 e.g., that \u201c<span id=\"en-NIV-23622\" class=\"text Matt-14-24\">the boat was . . . a considerable distance from land\u201d (Matthew 14:24), \u201cthe boat was in the middle of the lake\u201d (Mark 6:47), and \u201c<span id=\"en-NIV-26277\" class=\"text John-6-19\">they had rowed about three or four miles\u201d (John 6:19)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> \u2014 why not simply throw those primary sources out altogether? \u00a0In its current state, Lake Kinneret (often but erroneously called by Christians \u201cthe Sea of Galilee\u201d) is approximately thirteen miles in north-south length and seven and a half miles from west to east at its widest point. \u00a0(Once, in my misguided youth \u2014 which came before my misguided adulthood, which in its turn preceded my current misguided senescence \u2014 I set out to swim across it. \u00a0I had made considerable progress when an angry Israeli lifeguard on a paddle board caught up with me.) \u00a0The three gospel texts agree that the disciples and their boat were nowhere near the shore. \u00a0Jesus must have walked at least two or three miles to reach them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89389\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89389\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2020\/12\/117715327_916198678881089_8615019816577959675_o-1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-89389\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2020\/12\/117715327_916198678881089_8615019816577959675_o-1.jpg\" alt=\"David Baird's plates\" width=\"597\" height=\"334\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The replica of the Book of Mormon plates used in the Interpreter Foundation\u2019s \u201cWitnesses\u201d film project \u00a0(still photograph by James Jordan)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In support of this year\u2019s <em>Come, Follow Me<\/em> curriculum, which will shortly turn to the recovery of the Book of Mormon, the Interpreter Foundation is calling attention to the short video features that it derived from the theatrical film <em>Witnesses<\/em> and from that movie\u2019s accompanying docudrama, <em>Undaunted: Witnesses of the Book of Mormon<\/em>. \u00a0Here is yet another of those short video features. \u00a0(This one runs slightly less than 8.5 minutes.) \u00a0We hope that you\u2019ll find them inspirational and helpful and that, if you do, you\u2019ll share them with others:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dXNu5TgMyBE\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cEpisode 7: Did the Witnesses Ever Deny their Testimonies?\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"yt-core-attributed-string--link-inherit-color\" dir=\"auto\">Critics of the Church have claimed through the years that one or more of the witnesses of the Book of Mormon\u2014and of the Gold Plates\u2014eventually denied their testimonies.
