In fact, modern science, rather than discrediting religion, has strengthened its plausibility. The fine-tuning of physical laws, the unresolved nature of consciousness and the persistence of religious experiences all suggest that it\u2019s likely that a divine intelligence underlies reality. \u201cReason still points godward,\u201d Douthat writes.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Brad East, <em>Christianity Today<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/2025\/02\/ross-douthat-bets-on-belief-pascal-believe-review\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cRoss Douthat Bets on Belief: The Catholic journalist\u2019s new book updates Pascal\u2019s wager for our secular-yet-spooky age.\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSomething is happening.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mereorthodoxy.com\/evangelistic-opportunities-in-our-moment\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Christianity is having a moment<\/a>. Our culture is shifting. Whether this change will be minor, temporary, or tectonic, we cannot know. Nor can we know where it will end\u2014or even whether it will be good.\u00a0. . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTime will tell. For now, we should be keen to read the signs of the times. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/2024\/09\/christianity-biggest-skeptics-becoming-vocal-converts\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Intellectuals are converting<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Surprising-Rebirth-Belief-God-Christianity\/dp\/1496466772\/tag=christtoday-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Atheists are softening<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/2024\/11\/jordan-peterson-we-who-wrestle-with-god-review\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Agnostics are hungry<\/a>. No longer are believers on the back foot, defending alleged irrationality before a hostile consensus. Crystals and hexes, seances and saints, meditation and manifesting, angels and aliens, goop and God\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealmagazine.org\/self-creation-made-tara-isabella-burton-trump-karshashian-east\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the whole syncretistic bundle<\/a> is out in the open now. Religion is afoot in the public square. . . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe isn\u2019t demonstrating with certainty that God exists, in the manner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Know-Exists-Questions-Restless-Minds\/dp\/1683595270\/tag=christtoday-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">William Lane Craig<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Five-Proofs-Existence-Edward-Feser\/dp\/1621641333\/tag=christtoday-20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Edward Feser<\/a>. He\u2019s standing alongside readers, directing their gaze to a transcendent explanation for their own observations and experiences. . . .<\/p>\n<p>Second, Douthat\u2019s interreligious generosity is unfeigned; he really would prefer a reader embrace a religion other than Christianity than remain irreligious, agnostic, or noncommittal. And Christian convictions anchor this preference: For Douthat, the truth of Christian revelation is not an all-or-nothing affair. Neither\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=deuteronomy%206%3A4-5&amp;version=RSV\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the Shema<\/a>\u00a0nor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crcna.org\/welcome\/beliefs\/creeds\/nicene-creed\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the Nicene Creed<\/a> requires the total falsehood of every idea, text, and practice of every other spiritual tradition in the world. Much good and many true things may be found there, and adherents are not wrong to prize them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurther, Douthat believes in divine providence. A step toward Christ outside the church is nonetheless a step in the right direction. In this he takes Christ at his word: \u201cEveryone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened\u201d (Matt 7:8).\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At least as Brad East describes Douthat\u2019s attitude and project for <em>Christianity Today<\/em>, they resonate very strongly with me. \u00a0I, too, believe that there are strong clues out there pointing to a world bigger than that accepted by \u201cphysicalism,\u201d but that they are not coercive \u201cproofs.\u201d \u00a0And I, too, committed and believing Latter-day Saint though I am, am happy to see people accept Christianity even if they can\u2019t make their way the entire distance toward the Restoration, and to see them become theists of one stripe or another if they\u2019re unable to reach Christianity. \u00a0My brief discussion, in <a href=\"https:\/\/journal.interpreterfoundation.org\/prepping-for-the-last-battle\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">my recent <em>Interpreter<\/em> \u201cIntroduction,\u201d<\/a> \u00a0of C. S. Lewis\u2019s story of Emeth in <em>The Last Battle<\/em> is very much to the point here.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86470\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86470\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2020\/07\/Resized_Resized_20200702_202743.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-86470\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2020\/07\/Resized_Resized_20200702_202743.jpg\" alt=\"The 8 Witnesses in our documentary\" width=\"597\" height=\"411\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86470\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The experience of the Eight Witnesses as re-created for the documentary \u201cUndaunted: Witnesses of the Book of Mormon,\u201d in a still photograph by James Jordan. I frankly confess that I was disappointed, at first, by the very mundane appearance of this scene. But then I realized that my reaction was irrational. That the experience of the Eight Witnesses with the plates of the Book of Mormon was mundane, prosaic, matter of fact, is precisely the POINT of their experience and what gives their account its remarkable evidentiary power.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Just in time for this particular phase of the 2025 <em>Come, Follow Me<\/em> curriculum: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Y2O5f5mwtjc\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cEpisode 22: What Else did the Witnesses See?\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"yt-core-attributed-string--link-inherit-color\" dir=\"auto\">Witnesses of the Book of Mormon\u2014Insights Episode 22: While trying to dismiss claims that the witnesses interacted with the gold plates, critics often gloss over\u2014or even completely ignore\u2014the fact that many of the witnesses also interacted with other ancient objects.
