{"id":109073,"date":"2025-02-12T13:09:30","date_gmt":"2025-02-12T20:09:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/?p=109073"},"modified":"2025-02-12T16:29:20","modified_gmt":"2025-02-12T23:29:20","slug":"hells-bells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2025\/02\/hells-bells.html","title":{"rendered":"Hell&#8217;s Bells"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_109076\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-109076\" style=\"width: 598px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/02\/768px-Independent_Bank_in_Texas.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-109076\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/02\/768px-Independent_Bank_in_Texas.jpg\" alt=\"HQ of Independent Financial alksdjflksldjlsj\" width=\"598\" height=\"797\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-109076\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Independent Financial headquarters building in McKinney, Texas (Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Controversy about the proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/churchofjesuschristtemples.org\/mckinney-texas-temple\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">McKinney Texas Temple<\/a> (actually to be located in adjacent Fairview, north northeast of Dallas), appears to be bubbling up again, and critics of the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a> are, once again, accusing the Church of trying to bully and intimidate a humbly idyllic little community into rolling over and playing dead while the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Mormons<\/a> callously impose an enormous, triumphalist temple on innocent rural people. \u00a0(For aerial views of the neighborhood immediately surrounding the proposed temple in Fairview, see <a href=\"https:\/\/churchofjesuschristtemples.org\/mckinney-texas-temple\/aerial\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.) \u00a0It\u2019s the same bullying playbook that the Church followed in Cody, Wyoming, where <a href=\"https:\/\/churchofjesuschristtemples.org\/cody-wyoming-temple\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a vast 9,950-square-foot monstrosity<\/a> is already beginning to loom over the city, blotting out the night sky and obscuring the surrounding mountains from view. \u00a0(For aerial perspectives on the densely packed but sylvan residential area into which the Cody temple is being inserted, see <a href=\"https:\/\/churchofjesuschristtemples.org\/cody-wyoming-temple\/aerial\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.) \u00a0It\u2019s the same kind of unethical intimidation that the Church practiced with the <a href=\"https:\/\/churchofjesuschristtemples.org\/lone-mountain-nevada-temple\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lone Mountain Nevada Temple<\/a> in Las Vegas, which, the Associated Press has reliably informed its readers, is slated to be larger than the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. \u00a0(See the latter portion of my 3 October 2024 blog entry entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2024\/10\/flawed-reporting-about-the-new-temple-proposed-for-las-vegas.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cFlawed Reporting about the New Temple Proposed For Las Vegas.\u201d<\/a> \u00a0And, again, for aerial views of the surroundings of the Lone Mountain Nevada Temple, which my wife and I visited again just a week or two ago, please look <a href=\"https:\/\/churchofjesuschristtemples.org\/lone-mountain-nevada-temple\/aerial\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"p6\" data-aid=\"128258705\">Some say, \u201cI do not like to do it, for we never began to build a temple without the bells of hell beginning to ring.\u201d I want to hear them ring again.<\/p>\n<p id=\"p7\" data-aid=\"128258706\">We completed a temple in Kirtland and in Nauvoo; and did not the bells of hell toll all the time we were building them?
