Green<\/a> and entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/journal.interpreterfoundation.org\/easter-as-threshold-trauma-transformation-and-gods-presence-in-liminal-spaces\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cEaster as Threshold: Trauma, Transformation, and God\u2019s Presence in Liminal Spaces\u201d<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Abstract:<\/strong> <em>Using the context of Easter, this personal essay explores perceptions of God\u2019s presence and absence during human suffering. There is a theological thread that ties Christ\u2019s suffering for our griefs and sorrows during his Atonement directly to his ability to succor us as we enter into despair due to our own trauma. Our suffering occurs during moments of transition and vulnerability known as \u201climinal spaces.\u201d It is in these moments that the Savior meets us at the threshold, helping us move through trauma toward transformation in Christ. Until the accursed Latter-day Saints arrived in the area, this was a lush tropical paradise.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The same estimable fellow who, just a few days ago, completely, grossly, obviously, and undeniably misrepresented Heber C. Kimball\u2019s view of abortion and falsely claimed that abortion was extraordinarily common and well-accepted among earlyLatter-day Saints \u00a0\u2014 see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2025\/04\/brazenly-lying-about-a-nineteenth-century-church-leader.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cBrazenly Lying about a Nineteenth-Century Church Leader\u201d<\/a> \u2014 is now blaming the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a> for mental illness in Utah. \u00a0Why? \u00a0Because, he says, the Church fosters scrupulosity, obsessive perfectionism, guilt, and depression.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the issue is far more complicated and far less reducible to anti-Mormon propaganda than he would like it to appear. \u00a0In support of that assertion, I offer a few discussions that he almost certainly won\u2019t consult but that people seeking a <em>balanced<\/em> view of the subject certainly <em>should<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2077-1444\/14\/6\/701\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cReligion, Mental Health, and the Latter-day Saints: A Review of Literature 2005\u20132022\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/latterdaysaintmag.com\/two-studies-of-latter-day-saints-lgbtq-youth-and-suicide\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cTwo studies of Latter-day Saints, LGBTQ Youth, and Suicide\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thechurchnews.com\/living-faith\/2024\/10\/28\/youth-mental-health-improved-temple-attendance-byu-research-podcast-justin-dyer\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cBYU research finds link between temple attendance and improved mental health in youth: \u2018Being able to step back and serve other people, that is a beautiful, beautiful thing and helps us to walk the pathway of healing,\u2019 researcher tells the Church News podcast\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/faith\/2025\/03\/02\/perfectionism-perspective-latter-day-saints-outlook-byu-study\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cPerfectionism in perspective: Latter-day Saints\u2019 unique outlook: Study shows lower levels of toxic perfectionism among those with strong faith ties\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And the entirety of this recent multi-authored special number of <em>BYU Studies<\/em> is directly relevant to the matter: <a href=\"https:\/\/byustudies.byu.edu\/issue\/63-4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"> https:\/\/byustudies.byu.edu\/issue\/63-4<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36881\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36881\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/09\/800px-Lake_Kawaguchiko_Sakura_Mount_Fuji_3.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-36881\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/09\/800px-Lake_Kawaguchiko_Sakura_Mount_Fuji_3.jpg\" alt=\"Fuji-san with lake and cherry blossoms\" width=\"597\" height=\"400\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36881\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cherry blossoms, Lake Kawaguchiko, and Mount Fuji. Can anything possibly be more Japanese than this? \u00a0At least we won\u2019t be sending Suguru Onda to a Salvadoran prison or putting him in an internment camp. \u00a0(Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Many years ago, then-Senator Marco Rubio was my preferred Republican candidate for president, so I like to think (and I think it far and away most likely) that he personally had nothing at all to do with this particularly egregious case of federal stupidity: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/marco-rubio-revoked-international-student-190446379.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cMarco Rubio Revoked International Student\u2019s Visa for Dumbest Reason.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0But I\u2019m very pleased to see that Suguru Onda\u2019s situation is beginning to draw attention even beyond Utah: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/boingboing.net\/2025\/04\/17\/japanese-phd-student-forced-to-leave-u-s-because-another-person-caught-too-many-fish-at-a-church-outing.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cJapanese PhD student forced to leave U.S. because another person caught too many fish at a church outing.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 And I\u2019m happy that the governor of Utah is now getting involved in the general issue: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/utah\/2025\/04\/17\/governor-cox-seeking-answers-regarding-international-student-visas-being-revoked\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cGov. Spencer Cox wants info from Trump administration regarding international student visa revocations:\u00a0Visa cancellations are impacting international college students in schools across the nation, including many at Utah institutions.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you want to weigh in on behalf of Brother Onda (and against foolishness), please drop a brief note to Governor Cox or your delegates to Congress or Secretary Rubio. \u00a0In order to make contacting representatives in Congress easier (for at least a few of you here), I share the contact information for <em>my<\/em> representatives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.curtis.senate.gov\/share-your-opinion\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Senator John Curtis<\/a>,<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lee.senate.gov\/contact\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Senator Mike Lee<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mikekennedy.house.gov\/contact\/email-me?zip5=84058&amp;country_code=US&amp;address_line1=152%20Westview%20Drive&amp;locality=Orem&amp;administrative_area=UT\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Representative Mike Kennedy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I saw a comment at the <em>Deseret News<\/em> yesterday from somebody who seemingly believes that, under the current administration, the federal government can do no wrong. \u00a0He praised the expulsion order against Brother Onda, pointing out that the Ondas have been in the United States for six years, which, he said, is far too long. \u00a0They\u2019ve worn out their welcome and should go immediately. \u00a0Doctorates, he wrote, should never require more than a year, or at most two, to complete, so Suguru Onda is abusing our hospitality. \u00a0I sometimes wonder whether I\u2019m living in the Twilight Zone.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38826\"
