This fresco \u2013entitled \u201c\u1f00\u03bd\u03ac\u03c3\u03c4\u03b1\u03c3\u03b9\u03c2\u201d (\u201cResurrection\u201d), but really a representation of the \u201cDescensus\u201d or the \u201cHarrowing of Hell\u201d) \u2014 appears in Istanbul\u2019s (Constantinople\u2019s) marvelous \u201cChora Church,\u201d which is also known as the Kariye Mosque (Turkish: Kariye Camii), or the Church of the Holy Savior in Chora (Greek: \u1f18\u03ba\u03ba\u03bb\u03b7\u03c3\u03af\u03b1 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u1f09\u03b3\u03af\u03bf\u03c5 \u03a3\u03c9\u03c4\u1fc6\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2 \u1f10\u03bd \u03c4\u1fc7 \u03a7\u03ce\u03c1\u1fb3), and is located in the Edirnekap\u0131 neighborhood of Istanbul, Turkey, near the city\u2019s great Byzantine walls. \u00a0(Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I intended to do more than I have, both here on this blog and personally, with <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Holy Week or Passion Week \u2014 the term <em>passion<\/em> refers not to emotions in our modern sense, but to Christ\u2019s suffering \u2014 which began last weekend on Palm Sunday. \u00a0I\u2019ll try to make up for it, at least a little bit, today and tomorrow. \u00a0This has been a very hectic week. \u00a0Precisely as I wasn\u2019t hoping it to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On Thursday, I said nothing about \u201cHoly Thursday\u201d or \u201cMaundy Thursday.\u201d The derivation of the word <em>maundy<\/em> in the term is disputed, but it may\u00a0<\/span>derive \u00a0from the Latin word <i>mandatum<\/i>, or commandment, reflecting Jesus\u2019 words spoken to his disciples at the Last Supper:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"jesus\">A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"jesus\">By this shall all <em>men<\/em> know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. \u00a0(John 13:34)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For hundreds of millions of Christians worldwide, Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday recalls the Last Supper of Jesus and his apostles, and his washing of their feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">After that Passover meal, Jesus and his followers walked to the Garden of Gethsemane, where he apparently often went to pray. He withdrew himself, and, as Latter-day Saints understand, commenced there the awesome and mysterious process of his atonement for the sins of humanity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, a communal celebration of goodness and hope was marred, as so many human things are, by wickedness (Judas\u2019 treachery), and it was followed by stunning violence and injustice. Such, too often, is the world in which we live.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yesterday was Good Friday. (The word <em>good<\/em> here should be understood in one of its old, archaic meanings: \u201choly\u201d or \u201cpious.\u201d) \u00a0It marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death on Calvary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The messianic dreams of Jesus\u2019 disciples had, it seemed, been destroyed. The man in whom they had trusted was dead. They were scattered as sheep without a shepherd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">What they do not seem to have fully understood \u2014 who <em>can?<\/em> \u2014 is that their leader\u2019s violent, humiliating death, his apparent defeat, represented part of the greatest victory in this world\u2019s history. His cry \u201cIt is finished\u201d marked the culmination of the Atonement, his triumph over sin. It opened the door for all of us, if we will, to return into God\u2019s presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41131\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41131\" style=\"width: 363px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/04\/Resurrection_24.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41131\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2017\/04\/Resurrection_24.jpg\" alt=\"Anastasis\" width=\"363\" height=\"500\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41131\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Its title, in Greek at the top, identifies this icon as representing the resurrection of Jesus Christ but, again, it actually depicts his visit to the world of spirits. \u00a0(Wikimedia Commons public domain image) \u00a0Christ is shown pulling Adam (on the left) and Eve (on the right) from their tombs. Beneath his feet, Satan lies bound and you can see the broken doors of the gates of Hell (and parts of the shattered lock mechanism of those gates).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Holy Saturday, the last day of Holy Week and the day before Easter, follows Good Friday. As I write, today <em>is<\/em> Holy Saturday. \u00a0It commemorates the day that Jesus\u2019 broken body lay dead in the tomb. \u00a0It represents an interim period, a time of waiting and uncertainty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Modern believers in the Restoration, however, understand that, even while his body lay dead and motionless, Jesus, an immortal spirit, was preaching to the spirits in prison, inaugurating the great work of the redemption of the dead that is carried on now in our temples. \u00a0(See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/scriptures\/dc-testament\/dc\/138?lang=eng\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Doctrine and Covenants 138<\/a>.). We may not always see God visibly at work from our mortal vantage point in this fallen world, encircled by the veil, but he is always working for our salvation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On that ancient Saturday, though, the apostles were hiding, their hopes dashed, not knowing what to do, perhaps anticipating their own arrest and execution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Many of us are living our own Saturday, whether holy or unholy. Evil and injustice frequently seem to have the upper hand in the world around us, and indeed in our own lives. We\u2019re fearful and uncertain. Often, we\u2019ve been defeated, and perhaps we feel that any significant victory is beyond our reach. We\u2019re worn out. We\u2019ve heard promises of wonderful things to come, but we\u2019re unsure of them. Sometimes our days seem very dark. Have we believed in vain?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But the testimony of the four New Testament gospels, of the first apostles, of the early Christians, of Christian believers throughout the centuries, and of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his apostolic successors is that, early on Sunday morning, the stone had been rolled away and the tomb was empty. Jesus had risen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And, for all of us, Easter will come. Our Saturday of uncertainty and defeat does not, will not, continue forever. As the great English mystic Julian of Norwich (deceased circa 1416) so simply but memorably expressed the Christian hope, in words that she said had been given to her by God, \u201cAll shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday commemorate the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus and constitute what is sometimes called, in mainstream Christianity, the Holy Triduum (\u201cthree days\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Whenever we partake of the sacrament, the events of these days should be central to our reflections. They should absolutely be at the center of our thoughts throughout today and tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe fundamental principles of our religion,\u201d Joseph Smith declared, \u201care the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it\u201d (<em>Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith<\/em>, 121).<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_63690\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63690\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2018\/08\/TRAX_courthouse.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-63690\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2018\/08\/TRAX_courthouse.jpg\" alt=\"Mitchell was in Moss\" width=\"597\" height=\"366\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-63690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Federal courthouse in Salt Lake City, Utah, where I testified in the competency hearing for Brian David Mitchell and then, a year later, in his trial. \u00a0(Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On a much more mundane but still joyous note of liberation, I was delighted by this news item: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/education\/2025\/04\/18\/japanese-byu-student-suguru-onda-visa-reinstated\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cBYU Ph.D. student\u2019s international student visa reinstated.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0And I was very proud to see my friend Richard Lambert centrally involved in <em>this<\/em> story: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/utah\/2025\/04\/18\/immigrant-families-in-millcreek-utah-dhs-deportation-email-community-rallies\/?utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_medium=dn-social&amp;utm_campaign=twitter&amp;utm_content=deseretnews&amp;fbclid=IwY2xjawJwmNdleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHtZvAfrT155HJxjhfIJiGSJaNYItaJia3ZSoGoRocJW4DzQsJ51WjSlW98d4_aem_nZLBYQtdj7r9xaUi-hfPTQ\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cMillcreek neighbors rally as immigrant families face sudden deportation threat: \u2018I have never in my life, ever seen such a situation like this, where due process is completely ignored and intentionally ignored,\u2019 attorney Jim McConkie said\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Back when he was a federal United States attorney, Brother Lambert involved me as an expert witness for the prosecution in the case against Brian David Mitchell, the notorious kidnapper of Elizabeth Smart. \u00a0We\u2019ve been friends ever since, and he appears in the Interpreter Foundation film documentary film <em>Undaunted: Witnesses of the Book of Mormon<\/em> (which, by the way, is <a href=\"https:\/\/witnessesfilm.com\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">available for free streaming<\/a>).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33632\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33632\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/05\/washington-dc-temple-lds-1027620-gallery.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-33632\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/05\/washington-dc-temple-lds-1027620-gallery.jpg\" alt=\"The Washington DC Temple from near the entrance to the grounds\" width=\"596\" height=\"397\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33632\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richmond, Virginia, is about midway between the Raleigh North Carolina Temple and the Washington DC Temple, which is shown here. (Photo from LDS.org)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I also enjoyed this piece from the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>. \u00a0You may or may not be able to access it, but it is quite interesting: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/easter-merits-more-handels-messiah-music-history-christianity-e840538a?mod=itp_wsj,djemITP_h\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cEaster Merits More Handel\u2019s \u2018Messiah\u2019:\u00a0A Christmas favorite, the oratorio has more to contribute to Holy Week celebrations.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t agree more. \u00a0<em>Messiah<\/em> was actually written more for Easter than for Christmas. \u00a0The author, Nicole Ault, offers a number of interesting insights, but I was particularly pleased to see this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSomewhere in the unbroken decades of performances since, it became a yuletide industry while showing up much less at Easter time. London, where Handel lived and is buried, has some performances for the holiday. But searching the internet for a Holy Week performance in New York, Chicago or Washington, I found only one: A sing-along at the Latter-day Saints\u2019 D.C. Temple.
