(Fair use, I believe.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I was the respondent in the first full, public session of the conference today. \u00a0(The overall conference title is \u201cDiplomacy of the Heart: The Power of Intercultural Dialogue and Education in Peacebuilding.\u201d) \u00a0Given the fact, as discovered and announced over on the Peterson Obsession Board, that I\u2019m a religious and cultural bigot and something of a white supremacist who despises all things non-Western, it\u2019s not at all clear to me why I was invited to participate in such meetings. \u00a0And given my alleged attitude toward people who are religiously and ethnically different from myself, one can \u2014 heck, <em>I<\/em> can \u2014 only <em>imagine<\/em> my painful discomfort at being surrounded by such folks and at being obliged to actually <em>interact<\/em> with them. \u00a0Still, I think that my part in this morning\u2019s opening session went reasonably well, and I enjoyed the presentations to which I responded. \u00a0This first session was titled \u201cReligion as a Foundation for Peacebuilding: Exploring Its Potential and Challenges.\u201d \u00a0Ravan Hasanov, who is Executive Director of the Baku International Multiculturalism Centre in Azerbaijan, chaired the proceedings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first presentation, on \u201cQuran and the Role of Religious Leaders in Global Leadership,\u201d was given by Muhammad Eslami, of the Islamic Science and Culture Academy (ISCA), in Qum, Iran. \u00a0He was one of the four Iranian Shi\u2018is who participated in our marathon closed-door session yesterday. \u00a0By the way, Qum (or Qom) is considered a holy city in Twelver Shi\u2019a Islam \u2014 by far the majority Shi\u2019a \u201cdenomination\u201d \u2014 and is a significant pilgrimage destination: Roughly twenty million pilgrims visit the city annually. \u00a0It is also the largest center for Shi\u2019a scholarship in the world.<\/li>\n<li>Agil Shirinov, the Rector of the Azerbaijan Institute of Theology, spoke on \u201cThe Role of Theological Education Institutions in Promoting Mutual Understanding Between Different Religions.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Anar Gafarov, who heads the Department of Religious Sciences at the Azerbaijan Institute of Theology, delivered separate remarks on the role of theology and philosophy in either hindering or helping good relations between human groups. \u00a0(His presentation was not on the program as one distinct from Professor Shirinov\u2019s preceding paper, so I don\u2019t have a title for it.)<\/li>\n<li>Professor Mahdi Fadaei Mehrabani, of the University of Tehran, who was also one of the participants in yesterday\u2019s closed-door discussion, gave a presentation on \u201cPeacefulness: The Lost Continent of Religions in the Modern World.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>My response followed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 6\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>The second session of the morning, which went until lunch, was devoted to the theme of \u201cDiplomacy of the Heart: Integrating Literature, Law, and Religion in Regional Dialogue and Peacebuilding,\u201d and was chaired by Mehran Kamrava, who is based at Georgetown University\u2019s campus in Qatar. \u00a0Three presentations were given:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe Role of Ferdowsi\u2019s <em>Shahnameh<\/em> in Linking Civil Societies in Central Asia and the Middle East within the Framework of Neo-Regionalism Theory,\u201d by Mandana Tishehyar of the Department of Regional Studies in Iran\u2019s Allameh Tabataba\u2019i University. \u00a0(In conversation with Professor Tishehyar, by the way, I discover that she shares my lack of admiration for Timur-i Leng.)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHuman Dignity: A Legal Perspective for Diplomacy of the Heart,\u201d by the Iranian-born <a href=\"https:\/\/law.byu.edu\/explore\/resources\/faculty-directory\/shima-baradaran-baughman-3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Shima Baradaran Baughman<\/a>, who is Woodruff J. Deem Professor of Law and a Distinguished Fellow at Brigham Young University.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cChampioning Human Dignity through International Studies Programming,\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/politicalscience.byu.edu\/directory\/quinn-mecham\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Quinn Mecham<\/a>, who is a \u00a0professor in, and the Associate Director of, the Kennedy Center for International Studies at Brigham Young University.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 7\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>The main afternoon session was conducted under the theme \u201cFrom Legal Frameworks to Human Connection: Empathy, Law, and the Pedagogy of Peace.\u201d \u00a0It was chaired by <a href=\"https:\/\/law.byu.edu\/explore\/resources\/faculty-directory\/w-cole-durham-jr\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">W. Cole Durham, Jr.<\/a>, who was the founding director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iclrs.org\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">International Center for Law and Religion Studies<\/a> at Brigham Young University and who currently serves as the president of the \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.g20interfaith.org\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">G20 Interfaith Forum Association<\/a>. \u00a0These were the four presentations that were given during the session:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe Historical Evolution of Islamic Law in Central Asia and Its Significance for Contemporary Peacebuilding,\u201d by Abdumukhtor Rahmonov of the Tashkent State University of Law, which is located in the capital city of Usbekistan, Tashkent.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cCoexistence from an Islamic Perspective,\u201d by Mohammad Sahhaf Kashani, who comes from the Islamic Science and Culture Academy, in Qum, Iran.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cPreserving Sacred Spaces: The Role of International Law in Protecting Religious Heritage and Promoting Peace,\u201d presented by Peter Petkoff, who is Tutorial Law Fellow at Regent\u2019s Park College of the University of Oxford.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cReimagining Legal Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: How AI is Transforming Legal Education,\u201d by Shokhrukhbek Tillaboev of Tashkent State University of Law.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019m impressed, incidentally, with some of the things that I\u2019m learning about contemporary, post-Soviet, independent Uzbekistan. \u00a0Here is one group of factoids, shared by one of today\u2019s speakers, that caught my attention: \u00a0The nation\u2019s schools teach in seven languages, radio and television broadcasts are aired in twelve languages, and newspapers appear in ten languages.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_83021\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83021\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2020\/02\/78303409_724328758068083_143358500737646592_o.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-83021\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2020\/02\/78303409_724328758068083_143358500737646592_o.jpg\" alt=\"Jordan, Whitmer, and reporter\" width=\"597\" height=\"380\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-83021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the Interpreter Foundation\u2019s 2021 theatrical film \u201cWitnesses,\u201d an elderly David Whitmer (played by Paul Kandarian) recounts some of his story to a skeptical visiting reporter, shown on the right. \u00a0(Still photograph by James Jordan from the \u201cWitnesses\u201d film set). The shipment of sodium perchlorate, which reportedly had arrived\u00a0in two ships from China earlier this year and was being stored in the port, was meant to help replenish Iran\u2019s missile stocks, depleted from strikes on Israel.
