Rich Jr., and LaJean Purcell Carruth, <em>This Abominable Slavery: Race, Religion, and the Battle Over Human Bondage in Antebellum Utah<\/em> (New York: Oxford University Press, 2024). \u00a0As it happens, <em>This Abominable Slavery <\/em>is a major part of the inspiration for the topic of the address that I\u2019ll give at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairlatterdaysaints.org\/conference\/august-2025-fair-conference\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the 2025 installment of the annual FAIR Conference<\/a> this coming Friday and, along with Amy Tanner Thiriot, <em>Slavery in Zion: A Documentary and Genealogical History of Black Lives and Black Servitude in Utah Territory, 1847-1862<\/em> (Salt Lake City: The University of Utah Press, 2022), will be my principal source. \u00a0We are fortunate to have <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_G._Alexander\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Thomas G. Here\u2019s a breakdown of what the Church says and does:<br class=\"html-br\"><br class=\"html-br\"><span class=\"html-span xexx8yu xyri2b x18d9i69 x1c1uobl x1hl2dhg x16tdsg8 x1vvkbs x3nfvp2 x1j61x8r x1fcty0u xdj266r xat24cr xm2jcoa x1mpyi22 xxymvpz xlup9mm x1kky2od\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"xz74otr x15mokao x1ga7v0g x16uus16 xbiv7yw\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/t59\/2\/16\/1f54a.png\" alt=\"\ufffd\ufe0f\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\"><\/span> Core Principles<br class=\"html-br\"><br class=\"html-br\">The Church consistently emphasizes three guiding values:<br class=\"html-br\"><br class=\"html-br\">\u2022 Love for all God\u2019s children \u2014 including undocumented immigrants <br class=\"html-br\">\u2022 Obedience to the law \u2014 while recognizing the complexity of immigration policy <br class=\"html-br\">\u2022 Family unity \u2014 opposing policies that separate families <br class=\"html-br\"><br class=\"html-br\">These principles are reiterated in official statements and letters to local leaders, especially during times of heightened immigration enforcement.<br class=\"html-br\"><br class=\"html-br\"><span class=\"html-span xexx8yu xyri2b x18d9i69 x1c1uobl x1hl2dhg x16tdsg8 x1vvkbs x3nfvp2 x1j61x8r x1fcty0u xdj266r xat24cr xm2jcoa x1mpyi22 xxymvpz xlup9mm x1kky2od\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"xz74otr x15mokao x1ga7v0g x16uus16 xbiv7yw\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/t58\/2\/16\/1f6e0.png\" alt=\"\ufffd\ufe0f\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\"><\/span> Practical Support<br class=\"html-br\"><br class=\"html-br\">Local Church leaders are encouraged to:<br class=\"html-br\"><br class=\"html-br\">-Use fast-offering funds to provide food, clothing, and medical care to those in need, regardless of immigration status.<br class=\"html-br\">-Invites service to marginalized and immigrant communities through its JustServe outreach programs. <br class=\"html-br\">\u2022 Refer families to community resources for legal and emotional support. <br class=\"html-br\">\u2022 Avoid actions that could conflict with federal law, such as housing undocumented individuals long-term or transporting them across regions .<br class=\"html-br\"><br class=\"html-br\"><span class=\"html-span xexx8yu xyri2b x18d9i69 x1c1uobl x1hl2dhg x16tdsg8 x1vvkbs x3nfvp2 x1j61x8r x1fcty0u xdj266r xat24cr xm2jcoa x1mpyi22 xxymvpz xlup9mm x1kky2od\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"xz74otr x15mokao x1ga7v0g x16uus16 xbiv7yw\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/t28\/2\/16\/1f3db.png\" alt=\"\ufffd\ufe0f\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\"><\/span> Legal Guidance<br class=\"html-br\"><br class=\"html-br\">The Church\u2019s Office of General Counsel provides detailed instructions to help leaders navigate federal laws while still offering humanitarian aid.. This includes:<br class=\"html-br\"><br class=\"html-br\">\u2022 Avoiding legal sponsorship or testimony<br class=\"html-br\">\u2022 Ensuring Church buildings aren\u2019t used to shield individuals from law enforcement.<br class=\"html-br\"><br class=\"html-br\"><span class=\"html-span xexx8yu xyri2b x18d9i69 x1c1uobl x1hl2dhg x16tdsg8 x1vvkbs x3nfvp2 x1j61x8r x1fcty0u xdj266r xat24cr xm2jcoa x1mpyi22 xxymvpz xlup9mm x1kky2od\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"xz74otr x15mokao x1ga7v0g x16uus16 xbiv7yw\" src=\"https:\/\/static.xx.fbcdn.net\/images\/emoji.php\/v9\/t4f\/2\/16\/1f9ed.png\" alt=\"\ufffd\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\"><\/span> Historical and Moral Context<br class=\"html-br\"><br class=\"html-br\">The Church has acknowledged its own history of seeking refuge across borders\u2014such as when early Saints fled to Mexico in the 1840s and again in the 1880s to escape persecution.
