{"id":112439,"date":"2025-08-17T16:32:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-17T22:32:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/?p=112439"},"modified":"2025-08-18T12:35:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T18:35:17","slug":"is-utah-a-safe-place-or-an-unsafe-one-for-girls-and-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/danpeterson\/2025\/08\/is-utah-a-safe-place-or-an-unsafe-one-for-girls-and-women.html","title":{"rendered":"Is Utah a safe place or an unsafe one for girls and women?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97503\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97503\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2022\/11\/640px-Dead_Horse_Point_State_Park_Utah_35462745750-1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-97503\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2022\/11\/640px-Dead_Horse_Point_State_Park_Utah_35462745750-1.jpg\" alt=\"Szekely near Moab\" width=\"597\" height=\"398\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-97503\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sunrise at Dead Horse Point, Utah, by Pedro Szekely (Wikimedia CC public domain image).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The closing talk in our sacrament meeting today was devoted to the subject of \u201crepentance.\u201d \u00a0As I looked around at the congregation while the sister was speaking, I was happy that the bishopric had assigned her that subject. \u00a0Plainly, they were inspired in doing so: It was instantly obvious to me at a glance that everybody sitting around me badly needed to hear it. \u00a0I couldn\u2019t help but think of an entry in Ambrose Bierce\u2019s <em>Devil\u2019s Dictionary<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Christian, n.:<\/strong> one who believes that the New Testament is a divinely inspired book admirably suited to the spiritual needs of his neighbor.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On a somewhat more earnest note, the previous speaker told a horrendous story of going out rock-climbing in southern Utah with longtime friends, including one who, he said, was a kind of personal hero of his, a faithfully spiritual father of four (including one with severe disabilities, to whom he was wonderfully devoted) and evidently a role model in many ways. \u00a0The friend was also in excellent physical condition and an expert rock-climber. \u00a0But the speaker, who is himself still relatively young, kept speaking of his friend in the past tense, and I began to worry about where the story might be going. \u00a0Sure enough, owing to some sort of freak accident during their late-afternoon return to the trailhead \u2014 an accident that, I get the impression, they still don\u2019t fully understand \u2014 the friend fell two hundred feet. \u00a0He was evidently still breathing after the fall, but died while enroute to a hospital. \u00a0The remaining climbers, who had been looking forward to a relatively routine descent and a pizza dinner, were directed by rescue workers to remain suspended on the cliff until morning, and, although they feared for him, they didn\u2019t yet know for certain that their friend had died. \u00a0I can scarcely imagine so deeply shocking and distressing an incident. \u00a0But the speaker went on to tell of the faithfulness and resilience of his friend\u2019s now-widowed wife and their four children, and he managed to draw inspiration for us from an extraordinarily painful story. \u00a0Among other things, life is pain and loss. \u00a0How will we respond?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_112442\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112442\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/08\/Porter_Fork_Road_up_Millcreek_Canyon_Utah.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-112442\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/08\/Porter_Fork_Road_up_Millcreek_Canyon_Utah.jpg\" alt=\"It's really narrow. Yes, indeed.\" width=\"596\" height=\"794\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-112442\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Porter Fork Road up Millcreek Canyon in Salt Lake City, Utah. \u00a0We traveled this very road last evening. \u00a0(Wikimedia Commons photo by Darrellwilliams.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My wife and I enjoyed a very pleasant dinner on Saturday evening on the veranda of a cabin in Mill Creek Canyon (or Millcreek Canyon), above Salt Lake City (and directly beside the pleasantly burbling Mill Creek itself or, at least, a tributary of it). \u00a0We were invited to their cabin by a couple whom we hadn\u2019t previously known, but of whom we had heard for decades, a couple who had spent many years abroad (including lengthy periods in Cairo and Jerusalem). \u00a0We talked about a number things, including, unexpectedly, some remarkable stories out of the Second World War. \u00a0(He summarized for me an article that he has now completed about a rather famous bit of Latter-day Saint folklore related to World War Two; I hope that it will find a publisher soon.) \u00a0It was also fun to reminisce about common friends and acquaintances \u2014 and we were surprised to discover how remarkably many such common acquaintances and friends we <em>have<\/em>. \u00a0There are few better things in this life, I think, than good conversation with good people over a good meal in beautiful surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not exactly an admirer of the late Henry VIII of England, but he put it well in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jrBTuUKE044\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a song<\/a> that he is said to have written shortly after his coronation (possibly for his new wife, Catherine of Aragon):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Pastyme with good companye<br>\nI loue and schall vntil I dye;<br>\nGruche who lust, but none denye<br>\nso God be plesyed thus leue wyll I.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Or, in other words,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Pastime with good company<br>\nI love and shall until I die;<br>\nGrudge who will, but none deny<br>\nSo God be pleased thus live will I.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31479\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31479\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/03\/800px-Hans_Holbein_d._J._074.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-31479\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/03\/800px-Hans_Holbein_d._J._074.jpg\" alt=\"Henry the Eighth, murderous and lascivious swine\" width=\"597\" height=\"730\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Henry VIII, ca. 1539-1540, portrait by Hans Holbein the Younger<br>(Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some critics have tried for many years to puzzle out why it is that Utah is such a terrible state in which to live, and they have typically concluded that the cause is the malign influence of the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a>. \u00a0Here is a substantial article, retrieved from the <em>Christopher Hitchens Memorial \u201cHow Religion Poisons Everything\u201d File<\/em>\u2122, that nicely illustrates the comprehensive toxicity of religion and, specifically, of Utah\u2019s majority faith: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/indepth\/2025\/08\/16\/girls-and-women-in-utah\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cNational sexual violence data suggests Utah is one of the safest states for girls, women:\u00a0The nation\u2019s highest-quality, representative survey on sexual violence found that Utah had some of the lowest sexual violence rates\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">BYU professor Justin Dyer said the results are not a surprise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt fits with other things we know about Utah \u2014 the benefits of faith and family generally \u2014 including other research about violence and religiosity. So, none of this is particularly surprising.\u201d . . .<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">These findings above also align with the broader international research on vulnerabilities for sexual violence against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/indepth\/2025\/06\/22\/risk-factors-for-sexual-violence-against-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">women<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/indepth\/2025\/06\/22\/risk-factors-for-sexual-violence-against-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">children<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A <em>Deseret News<\/em> review of 500 studies found that sincere, healthy religious faith \u2014 and the habits spirituality often promotes, such as lower alcohol and drug use, fewer risky sexual behaviors, and greater emphasis on marriage, education, and financial responsibility \u2014 can have a protective effect. Many of these patterns are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/utah\/2024\/06\/16\/12-ways-utah-is-leading-nation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">more common<\/a> in Utah.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Certain critics, of course, are now likely to say that I didn\u2019t actually read the article and that I\u2019m misrepresenting its contents. \u00a0(This has been alleged several times over the past few days.) \u00a0Permit me to anticipate the responses: \u00a0The article actually argues, they may perhaps say, that national sexual violence data depicts Utah as the most unsafe of the fifty states for girls and women. \u00a0The nation\u2019s highest-quality and most representative survey on sexual violence, they will possibly say, actually found that Utah had some of the highest rates of sexual violence in the Union. \u00a0I\u2019m just too lazy to have noticed and too dishonest to fess up.<\/p>\n<p>But the article above scarcely exhausts the <em>Hitchens File<\/em>. \u00a0Here\u2019s another specimen, for example, that was recently recovered from it: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/faith\/2025\/08\/15\/church-cares-for-women-children-vulnerable-communities-in-mexico\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cHow the Church of Jesus Christ is caring for women, children and vulnerable communities in Mexico: The church\u2019s humanitarian efforts in Mexico are addressing health and social needs across vulnerable communities\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And still another: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org\/article\/colombia-honors-the-church-of-jesus-christs-humanitarian-service\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cColombia Honors the Church of Jesus Christ\u2019s Humanitarian Service:\u00a0The recognition highlights the Church\u2019s contribution to spiritual development, service to others and humanitarian aid\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 The closing talk in our sacrament meeting today was devoted to the subject of \u201crepentance.\u201d \u00a0As I looked around at the congregation while the sister was speaking, I was happy that the bishopric had assigned her that subject. \u00a0Plainly, they were inspired in doing so: It was instantly obvious to me at a glance [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1019,"featured_media":112442,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[14510,2905,788,2860,782,2201],"class_list":["post-112439","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-girls","tag-latter-day-saint","tag-mormon","tag-patriarchy","tag-utah","tag-women"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Is Utah a safe place or an unsafe one for girls and women?<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"&nbsp;
