Monson, Elder Dallin H. Oaks, and an unnamed White House staffer in presenting President Barack Obama with his family tree as a gift from the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Dallin H. Oaks is the current leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and, if precedent is followed, he will soon be officially installed as the president of the Church in a reorganized First Presidency. \u00a0There will be considerable media focus on him, and much of it will be negative or, at best, skeptical of him. \u00a0I\u2019m quite confident that a prominent part of that focus will feature his alleged hostility to homosexuals, and that distorted accounts of aversion therapy for homosexuality at Brigham Young University during his 1971-1980 \u00a0tenure as the University\u2019s president will feature heavily in media coverage. \u00a0Here are three useful resources for developing (and encouraging) an accurate understanding of that matter:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairlatterdaysaints.org\/aversion-therapy-at-byu\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cAversion Therapy at BYU\u201d<\/a> (a relatively short but quite useful article from FAIR)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairlatterdaysaints.org\/home-page\/current-events\/aversion-therapy-for-homosexuality-in-scientific-historical-context\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cAversion Therapy for Homosexuality in Scientific Historical Context\u201d<\/a> (a much longer and rather comprehensive treatment, also from FAIR)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mormonr.org\/qnas\/parwO\/gay_conversion_therapy_and_byu\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cGay Conversion Therapy and BYU\u201d<\/a> (a very useful compilation of materials, with a timeline, from <em>Mormonr<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113042\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113042\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/09\/detroit-temple-lds-837615-wallpaper.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-113042\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/09\/detroit-temple-lds-837615-wallpaper.jpg\" alt=\"a temple in or near Detroit sldkfsjdsjsl\" width=\"597\" height=\"373\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Detroit Michigan Temple, the state\u2019s first, will shortly be joined by a second, in Grand Rapids. (LDS Media Library)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Worthwhile and even inspiring information continues to pour forth from that deadly attack on a Latter-day Saint stake center in Grand Blanc, Michigan. \u00a0I call two items to your attention:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org\/article\/grand-blanc-bishop-speaks-about-tragic-shooting\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cBishop of Grand Blanc, Michigan Congregation Speaks About Tragic Shooting\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/faith\/2025\/09\/29\/an-eyewitness-account-from-michigan-latter-day-saints-under-gunfire-fought-to-save-each-other\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cAn eyewitness account from Michigan: Latter-day Saints under gunfire fought to save each other: Members of the Grand Blanc Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints evacuated through the back of the building as the shooter entered the front\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A number of groups have stepped forward to condemn the Michigan attack and to support those who were victimized by it. \u00a0I\u2019ve seen accounts of vigils being held in churches of other denominations near the now-destroyed stake center, and I was also pleased to see this, from the Muslim Public Affairs Council, an organization with which I have an ongoing relationship: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpac.org\/statements\/mpac-condemns-deadly-michigan-church-shooting-highlights-growing-threats-to-religious-institutions\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cMPAC Condemns Deadly Michigan Church Shooting, Highlights Growing Threats to Religious Institutions.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 And I liked this little piece from the <em>Babylon Bee<\/em>, which, I think it safe to say, leans politically conservative and Evangelical: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/babylonbee.com\/news\/mormons-respond-to-attack-by-continuing-to-be-amazingly-kind-to-everyone\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cMormons Respond To Attack By Continuing To Be Amazingly Kind To Everyone\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, though, the actions of the Michigan attacker didn\u2019t emerge from a vacuum, and his apparent description of Latter-day Saints and\/or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as \u201cthe anti-Christ\u201d seems a rather significant clue to at least part of the mix that went into Sunday morning\u2019s assault. \u00a0The Michigan city council candidate who spoke to Mr. Sanford said that what Mr. Sanford said to him was pretty much standard-issue anti-Mormonism of the kind that\u2019s readily available online and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113039\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113039\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/09\/556648311_10172209802690521_225090542281913594_n.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-113039\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/09\/556648311_10172209802690521_225090542281913594_n.jpg\" alt=\"psodiauisuanivheiuqhuebuvbwei4bn3niperivpspuyt0q9743957263837684t7y8iw\" width=\"596\" height=\"249\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113039\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is an example, from just after the assassination of Charlie Kirk on the campus of Utah Valley University, of the literal demonization of Latter-day Saints and their faith. \u00a0Such demonization is, in my experience, most commonly the work of a certain type of Evangelical Protestants \u2014 although, I hasten to add, not of <em>all<\/em> Evangelicals. \u00a0(See the <em>Babylon Bee<\/em> article to which I link just above.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113045\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113045\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/09\/555928104_10233067070073050_82721284394895859_n.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-113045\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/09\/555928104_10233067070073050_82721284394895859_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"596\" height=\"123\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113045\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I\u2019m told that there have been a very large number of such comments posted all over social media in the wake of the Michigan attack. \u00a0This is somewhat discouraging, but, alas, not at all surprising.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113048\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113048\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/09\/556231041_10233067070873070_6572750981367331024_n.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-113048\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/09\/556231041_10233067070873070_6572750981367331024_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"596\" height=\"252\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113048\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Did this kind of attitude affect the attacker in Michigan? It seems very likely to me that it did.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113054\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113054\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/09\/556908937_10161739797669249_7505236313098307551_n.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-113054\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/09\/556908937_10161739797669249_7505236313098307551_n.jpg\" alt=\"Horrific. slkdfjlskjfljslk\" width=\"597\" height=\"776\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113054\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I hope that this person wasn\u2019t serious. But, if it\u2019s a joke (which I doubt), I\u2019ll admit that I can\u2019t see any humor in it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here, though, is something remarkable that I want to bring to your attention. \u00a0It\u2019s an opportunity to respond to hatred with love.<\/p>\n<p>There are many worthy causes in the world. \u00a0(And yes, <a href=\"https:\/\/interpreterfoundation.org\/foundation\/donate\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the Interpreter Foundation<\/a> is one of those worthy causes, and it needs support.) \u00a0In particular, multiple victims of the Grand Blanc massacre \u2014 and their families \u2014 will require help. \u00a0But Thomas Jacob Sanford leaves behind other victims of his vicious act, as well, and they should not be wholly forgotten. \u00a0I\u2019m very pleased that a Latter-day Saint has stepped forward to organize this. \u00a0I\u2019ve been assured by someone whom I trust that this is entirely legitimate. \u00a0I myself have made a small donation, and I encourage you to consider doing so, as well: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.givesendgo.com\/helptheSanfordfamily?fbclid=IwY2xjawNI_xxleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHtRnCl8PADpiz0uKxYDej0lYePZD0k61SZFOASF9ciwHAquse0eitywo5i6I_aem_cT-ml8gwuPR5gpBHcBUXDw\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cHelp the Sanford Family\u201d<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>My name is Dave.
