She\u2019s not just telling her story\u2014she\u2019s opening the door. Inside Heather Gay\u2019s Docuseries on Faith, Family, and Queer Survival.\u201dl<\/a>\u00a0 Here is a summary from the article:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Issues Raised in the Series<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conversion therapy and internalized shame<\/li>\n<li>Sexual abuse within church communities<\/li>\n<li>Obedience culture and systemic silencing<\/li>\n<li>Women\u2019s roles and limitations in Mormon doctrine<\/li>\n<li>Leaving a high-control faith without losing family<\/li>\n<li>What it means to be queer in a religion that won\u2019t say the word<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Now that Dallin H. Oaks has assumed the presidency of the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a>, I anticipate that considerable attention will be focused on his \u00a0supposed hatred of homosexuals, and that critical accounts of aversion therapy for homosexuality at Brigham Young University during his 1971-1980 tenure as the University\u2019s president will feature heavily in media coverage.\u00a0 This Bravo series should help such coverage reach a relatively large popular audience that won\u2019t likely be sympathetic toward the Church.\u00a0 Accordingly, yet again, I share three items that may help to accurately understand and explain the issue:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairlatterdaysaints.org\/aversion-therapy-at-byu\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cAversion Therapy at BYU\u201d<\/a> (a relatively short but quite useful article from FAIR)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairlatterdaysaints.org\/home-page\/current-events\/aversion-therapy-for-homosexuality-in-scientific-historical-context\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cAversion Therapy for Homosexuality in Scientific Historical Context\u201d<\/a> (a much longer and rather comprehensive treatment, also from FAIR)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mormonr.org\/qnas\/parwO\/gay_conversion_therapy_and_byu\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cGay Conversion Therapy and BYU\u201d<\/a> (a very useful compilation of materials, with a timeline, from <em>Mormonr<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36526\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36526\" style=\"width: 596px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/09\/Exterior_of_Carthage_Jail_by_C.C.A._Christensen.png\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-36526\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2016\/09\/Exterior_of_Carthage_Jail_by_C.C.A._Christensen.png\" alt=\"C.C.A.C. does Carthage Jail\" width=\"596\" height=\"402\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36526\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The assassination of Joseph and Hyrum Smith at Carthage Jail in Illinois, as depicted by C. Christensen (d. 1912). \u00a0Wikimedia Commons public domain image<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/blockquote>\n<p>In our current social climate, conspiracy theories abound. \u00a0More than they usually do, or so it seems to me. \u00a0And not only in politics but with regard to public health and notable crimes (e.g., the murder of Charlie Kirk) and even, sadly, among some members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in connection with the Church\u2019s history and its current leadership. \u00a0(Did the Quorum of the Twelve illegitimately seize leadership of the Church via an \u201capostolic coup\u201d in 1844? \u00a0Did John Taylor and Willard Richards assassinate Joseph Smith and Hyrum Smith at Carthage Jail on orders from Brigham Young? \u00a0Did Brigham Young and one or two co-conspirators forge Doctrine and Covenants 132 and falsely attribute the pretended \u201crevelation\u201d to Joseph Smith?) \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/latterdaysaintmag.com\/author\/stevedjr\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Steve Densley, Jr.<\/a> \u2014 who happens to be the executive vice president of the Interpreter Foundation \u2014 published an article on the general topic of imagined conspiracies yesterday in <em>Meridian Magazine<\/em>: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/latterdaysaintmag.com\/conspiracy-theories-why-they-captivate-us-and-how-they-divide-us\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cConspiracy Theories: Why They Captivate Us and How They Divide Us.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28869\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28869\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/12\/800px-Canterbury_Cathedral_02.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-28869\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2015\/12\/800px-Canterbury_Cathedral_02.jpg\" alt=\"Where St. Thomas Beckett was killed.\" width=\"597\" height=\"701\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28869\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Canterbury Cathedral in England (Wikimedia Commons public domain image)<br>Margaret Barker was granted a doctorate by specific decree of the Archbishop of Canterbury.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I\u2019ve never had any special theological affection for the Anglican Church, but I do like Christianity. \u00a0Moreover, I\u2019m an Anglophile \u2014 see <a href=\"https:\/\/bountifultravel.com\/trips\/church-history-and-great-britain-with-the-interpreter-foundation\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a> for a practical illustration of my love for England \u2014 and the Church of England (aka the Anglican or Episcopal Church) is a major element in what makes up \u201cEnglishness.\u201d \u00a0Accordingly, stories such as this one from <em>Christianity Today<\/em> leave me saddened: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/2025\/10\/anglican-communion-gafcon-break-canterbury-archbishop\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cThe Anglican Communion Is Coming Apart: Conservative Gafcon leaders break from Canterbury and claim the future of global Anglicanism.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 Elsewhere today, I read that, while about 1.5 million people attended weekly Church of England services in the 1960s, only half a million people do so today \u2014 which means, given the growth in the English population, that the percentage of the citizenry who attend Anglican services each week has fallen by approximately seventy-five percent. \u00a0That\u2019s nothing short of catastrophic.<\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s another, different, perspective on religiosity in today\u2019s Great Britain: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theosthinktank.co.uk\/comment\/2025\/05\/13\/why-are-young-people-flocking-to-religion\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201c(Why) are young people flocking to religion? Is there really a resurgence in Christianity? Nick Spencer interrogates recent claims before asking why young people are turning to religion.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, while it isn\u2019t focused on the United Kingdom, this article, which was written by social scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/ees.catholic.edu\/faculty-and-research\/faculty-profiles\/stephen-cranney\/index.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Cranney<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/stores\/author\/B00A3KK2VO\/about\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jacob Hess<\/a> for the <em>Deseret News<\/em>, covers some closely adjacent territory: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/opinion\/2025\/10\/26\/latter-day-saint-youth-arent-following-national-trends\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cWhen compared with national faith trends, Latter-day Saint youth keep surprising us:\u00a0The Church of Jesus Christ\u2019s plans to create 55 new missions reflects a deepening, counter-cultural faith engagement for young members\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_111974\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111974\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/07\/port-moresby-papua-new-guinea-temple-60835-thumb.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-111974\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2025\/07\/port-moresby-papua-new-guinea-temple-60835-thumb.jpg\" alt=\"a temple in New Guinea!\" width=\"300\" height=\"314\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-111974\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Port Moresby Papua New Guinea Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is well along its way to completion.
