into the Christmas season. \u00a0(See <a href=\"https:\/\/babylonbee.com\/news\/chicago-kicks-off-holiday-season-by-unveiling-festive-red-and-green-crime-scene-tape?fbclid=IwY2xjawOZYBRleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEeQBrT2dZShs4osshekf22ozbH6iT9WDIMPIUfVRjM5yUQZiln6N3NUKU07EM_aem_veFR13EcE5YepEtxJODM2w\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this notable bit of holiday cheer<\/a> from Chicago!)<\/p>\n<p>At some point between now and Christmas Day, I hope that you will take the opportunity to watch the eighteen-minute film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yXWoKi5x3lw\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Christ Child: A Nativity Story<\/em><\/a>, which I regard as one of the best movies ever made by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. \u00a0It has the characters speaking the real languages of the story. \u00a0It sets the story properly in a first-century Judaea that actually <em>looks<\/em> like first-century Judaea. \u00a0The ambience is, well, <em>humble<\/em>. \u00a0The manger is, as it almost certainly was, a stone feeding trough for animals (from the French verb <em>manger <\/em>[pronounced roughly <em>mahn-zhay<\/em>], \u201cto eat\u201d) in the style of stony Palestine, rather than a wooden crib in the style of forested Austria or Bavaria or wooded Jacobean England. \u00a0And the emotional reaction of the principal \u201cWise Man\u201d to the Christ child \u2014 who is of the proper age: no longer an infant but a toddler \u2014 never fails to move me.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first of my Christmas-related media recommendations for 2025. \u00a0It won\u2019t be the last, however, although by record of the horrors and depredations visited upon the world by ravening theists and the vicious absurdities of theism:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a the unmixed blessings that come from rejecting religion: \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/opinion\/2025\/11\/30\/getting-real-about-loss-of-faith\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cPerspective: Let\u2019s get real about loss of faith:\u00a0Individuals who have stepped away from faith speak candidly about real life trade-offs, heartaches and ongoing challenges\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Happily, though, in another important article, there seems reason to hope that organized religion is losing its hold on (at least American) humanity and that, therefore, crimes against decency such as those mentioned immediately above may someday be mere dim memories of our barbaric past: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/opinion\/2025\/11\/30\/confidence-in-religion-is-declining\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cAnalysis: Confidence in religion is declining \u2013 along with confidence in everything else:\u00a0A focus on declining confidence in organized religion misses the broader backdrop where institutional confidence is falling virtually everywhere\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And the disappearance of religion may well open the future up for absolutely great things: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2025\/11\/21\/religion-weakens-socialism-strengthens\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cAs Religion Weakens, Socialism Strengthens\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 There have, it\u2019s true, been halfhearted attempts at building socialist utopias in the past \u2014 in, for instance, Albania, Cambodia, China, Cuba, North Korea, the former Soviet Union, Vietnam, and, in its \u201cNational Socialist\u201d variant, in Germany and much of Europe in the 1930s and 1940s \u2014 but these have always been marred by glitches and minor mishaps. \u00a0Surely, it\u2019s time to try again. \u00a0The State is waiting to be adored again as the source of whatever rights we might claim and whatever good we might desire. \u00a0What could
