image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>And, speaking of Christmas Eve, one of my immediate descendants called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vHriYpNoDbA\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this old song (\u201cChristmas Eve Can Kill You\u201d)<\/a>, originally by the Everly Brothers, \u00a0to my attention. \u00a0I had never heard it before. \u00a0There\u2019s a powerful message in the lyrics, to which the video that accompanies my link could easily have been made more directly relevant:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"ujudUb\">The winter\u2019s flaking snow is brushing through the pinewood trees<br aria-hidden=\"true\">I stuck my hands down deep inside my coat<br aria-hidden=\"true\">I think of years ago and half remembered Christmas trees<br aria-hidden=\"true\">And faces that still warm me with their glow<\/div>\n<div class=\"ujudUb\">The cold and empty evening hangs around me like a ghost<br aria-hidden=\"true\">I listen to my footsteps in the snow<br aria-hidden=\"true\">The sound of one man walkin\u2019 through the snow can break your heart<br aria-hidden=\"true\">But stopping doesn\u2019t help, so on I\u2019ll go<\/div>\n<div class=\"ujudUb\">And Christmas Eve can kill you<br aria-hidden=\"true\">When you\u2019re trying to hitch a ride to anywhere<\/div>\n<div class=\"ujudUb\">The icy air I\u2019m breathin\u2019 is all that keeps me on my feet<br aria-hidden=\"true\">I feel like I\u2019ve been walking all my life<br aria-hidden=\"true\">A car goes running by, the man don\u2019t even turn his head<br aria-hidden=\"true\">Guess he\u2019s busy being Santa Claus tonight<\/div>\n<div class=\"ujudUb\">The saddest part of all is knowing if I switched with him<br aria-hidden=\"true\">I\u2019d image)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>I was saddened, yesterday, to learn of the death of one of my most important and influential undergraduate teachers, Thomas W. Mackay, who passed away on Monday, 22 December. \u00a0I\u2019ll have more to say about him after the Christmas holiday. \u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcmillanmortuary.com\/obituaries\/thomas-mackay?ttm_pid=210538879&amp;ttm_affiliate=legacypro&amp;ttm_affiliatetype=standard&amp;ttm_campaign=legacy\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">His obituary<\/a> is relatively sparse and, oddly, I\u2019ve been unable to locate a photograph of him.<\/p>\n<p>Very few of those are still around who, prior to my marriage, proved pivotal to the course of my subsequent life. \u00a0Maybe, now, <em>none<\/em>. \u00a0(I\u2019ll have to give that some thought.) \u00a0I think that there may be a message for <em>me<\/em> in that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96229\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96229\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2022\/08\/saints_standard_truth_temples-1-scaled.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-96229\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/186\/2022\/08\/saints_standard_truth_temples-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Temple in Zollikofen\" width=\"597\" height=\"336\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I love the cover art for the third volume of \u201cSaints,\u201d the official history published by the <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a>.
