Accordingly, there are no obvious television aerials, no intrusive overhead cables, and no white or yellow lines on the (dead-end) road through the village. Which is one of the major reasons for the fact that Downham has often been used in television shows and in movies.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This coming May, Kris Frederickson and I are scheduled to accompany a tour bearing the title \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bountifultravel.com\/trips\/church-history-and-great-britain-with-the-interpreter-foundation\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cChurch History And Great Britain With the Interpreter Foundation.\u201d<\/a> \u00a0Moreover, this tour group will be accompanied by Peter Fagg, a superb licensed English Latter-day Saint tour guide who knows British history \u2014 and, in particular, Latter-day Saint British history \u2014 as well as anybody I\u2019ve ever met, and who understands how to make that history come to life in a remarkable way. \u00a0(We\u2019ve traveled with him on numerous prior occasions and, if anything, he\u2019s improved with the passage of time.)<\/p>\n<p>That tour does not, however, explain my late-night viewing habits. \u00a0You\u2019re wondering about them, no doubt.<\/p>\n<p>My wife and I typically need something late in the evening to help us wind down. \u00a0And few things do that nearly as well as a nice British homicide. \u00a0(For Christmas, I gave her a copy of\u00a0Maureen Johnson and Jay Cooper, <em>Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village<\/em> [California and New York: Ten Speed Press, 2021].)<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, given that need, she and I have recently been re-watching the superb British series <em>Foyle\u2019s War<\/em>. \u00a0I\u2019ve enjoyed its portrayal of England during and immediately after the Second World War. \u00a0Somehow, it had never occurred to me that lowlifes, smugglers, leftist agitators, corrupt corporate businessmen, and murderers (to say nothing of saboteurs) not only continued to exist during the great idealistic, nation-unifying crusade against fascism but, in some cases, found ways to thrive. \u00a0And Michael Kitchen, as Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle, is superb. \u00a0I recall a review of the series from many years ago \u2014 in <em>National Review<\/em>, I think \u2014 that said of Mr. Kitchen that he could do more with the twitch of a lip or the lifting of an eyebrow than most actors can do with their entire bodies.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the episodes deal with the sometimes very awkward relations between English locals and the American soldiers who were stationed there, like my father. \u00a0Prior to his going over to the Continent with General Patton\u2019s Third Army, he spent time in High Wycombe, located between London and Oxford, working, preparatory to the D-Day invasion, in photo reconnaissance interpretation. \u00a0There are allusions in <em>Foyle\u2019s War<\/em> to such work in High Wycombe. \u00a0Last night, we watched an episode entitled \u201cTrespass.\u201d \u00a0At one point in it, I was struck by certain distinct parallels to issues that we face today.<\/p>\n<p>I want to assure anybody who might be considering whether or not to join our tour that we will <em>not<\/em> be visiting the Shetland islands. \u00a0Absolutely not. \u00a0We recently binged on episodes of the British murder mystery <em>Shetland<\/em>, and we\u2019ve concluded that the place is simply too dangerous. \u00a0The number of homicides there per capita \u2014 or perhaps better, per sheep \u2014 is astoundingly high.<\/p>\n<p>We also won\u2019t be visiting Miss Jane Marple\u2019s home village of St. Mary Mead \u2014 located in Downshire, which is later known as Radfordshire \u2014 and we won\u2019t go to Midsomer County, which straddles part of Berkshire and the northern portion of Hampshire. \u00a0Both are deservedly well-known for the bizarre murders that occur in them almost weekly. \u00a0Happily, avoiding them is made easier by their both being fictional.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad__child-0 ad__align ad__slot--wrapper\" data-instance-child=\"oU7xiCdICU\">\n<div id=\"incontent2\" class=\"ad__slot\" role=\"region\" data-cmd=\"true\" data-unit=\"1xas7u\" aria-label=\"Advertisement\" data-google-query-id=\"CLe7zcOur5EDFbXbuAgdTyongw\">\n<p>We will, though, be visiting Oxford \u2014 notwithstanding the fact that, as illustrated by the interrelated detective series <em>Inspector Morse<\/em>, <em>Lewis<\/em>, and <em>Endeavour<\/em>, the Oxford University faculty appears to have been hired, to a significant degree, on the basis of its proclivity for murder.<\/p>\n<p>But we\u2019ll also spend time in the picture-perfect Lancashire village of Downham. \u00a0Not because it has any reputation as the murder capital of the Ribble Valley; so far as I\u2019m aware, Downham is reasonably safe. \u00a0 We\u2019ll visit it because it\u2019s the place where Elder Heber C. Kimball enjoyed remarkable missionary success in the late 1830s and where, more recently, Elder Jeffrey R.
