<\/a>I remind you, once again, of our Becoming Brigham<\/em> fireside this coming Saturday, 31 January, to be held at 7 PM at the Orem Lakeview Stake Center: 450 West 1800 South, Orem. \u00a0And, in the meantime, don\u2019t fail to watch the first episode of Becoming Brigham<\/em>; Episode 2 goes up on Monday. \u00a0Watch Episode 1 here<\/a>.<\/p>\n Incidentally, regarding my post yesterday \u2014 \u201cHow I became a movie star\u201d<\/a> \u2014 is there a gene that allows human brains to perceive irony? \u00a0A gene that some rare but unfortunate individuals lack<\/em>? \u00a0I would have thought the relevant portion of that blog entry so obviously<\/em> ironic that it was actually a bit embarrassing.<\/em> \u00a0But no. \u00a0Evidently it absolutely sailed over the head of at least one reader, who believes \u2014 or, of course, maybe just pretends<\/em> to believe \u2014 that I actually do include myself in the Set of Handsome Leading Men that is populated by Gregory Peck, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, George Clooney, and Brad Pitt, such that, when you rattle those names off, my name (or, perhaps better, my pretty face) is inevitably the next one that will occur to you. \u00a0Weird!<\/p>\n \n<\/p><\/div>\n Part of our book chapter reprint series, this article originally appeared in Steadfast in Defense of Faith: Essays in Honor of Daniel C. He wrote, \u2018And I, Nephi, did build a temple; and I did construct it after the manner of the temple of Solomon save it were not built of so many precious things; for they were not to be found upon the land, wherefore, it could not be built like unto Solomon\u2019s temple. But the manner of the construction was like unto the temple of Solomon; and the workmanship thereof was exceedingly fine\u2019 (2 Nephi 5:16). Opponents of the Book of Mormon have mocked the mention of an Israelite temple built outside Jerusalem since a common belief among nineteenth-century readers of the Bible was that the only legitimate Israelite temple was located in Jerusalem.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Please note that this article \u2014 as many others before it have<\/em> been and presumably as many others after it will<\/em> be \u2014 is explicitly identified as a \u201creprint\u201d and that it has been posted on a Wednesday. \u00a0By contrast, our new<\/em> articles are published in our journal<\/em>, where they appear on Fridays<\/em>. \u00a0Once, a few years ago, a bewildered critic who was confused by the difference between \u201creprints\u201d from our books, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, new articles in the journal (or, perhaps, between Fridays and other days of the week that aren\u2019t<\/em> Fridays) became righteously and publicly indignant, alleging that the Interpreter Foundation was wickedly scheming to defraud readers by recycling old articles as new articles. \u00a0Don\u2019t be that guy.<\/p>\n Every night, as soon as my head hits the pillow, music begins to run insistently and repetitively through my head. \u00a0It seems to have no connection whatever with what I\u2019ve been doing or thinking or writing during the preceding day. \u00a0And it starts instantly. \u00a0One night it will be classical, the next night it will be classic rock, and sometimes it\u2019s Broadway tunes. \u00a0I don\u2019t know who or what chooses the selections, but I have to fight overnight to still them.<\/p>\n Last night, it was Judy Collins\u2019s rendition of \u201cSomeday Soon.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 Which is just a bit strange: I\u2019m not sure why, but I was never very enthusiastic about Judy Collins. \u00a0She sang many songs that I liked, and she sang them well. \u00a0I really liked, and still really like, what was then commonly called \u201cfolk rock,\u201d as well as folk music itself. \u00a0After all, I\u2019m a child of late-sixties California, and I eventually married a girl from Colorado. \u00a0Moreover, it didn\u2019t hurt, in my adolescence and early twenties, that Judy Collins was pretty. \u00a0But, somehow, her voice, which was actually quite good, \u00a0didn\u2019t seem to me to have enough color or personality. \u00a0(I felt much the same about Gordon Lightfoot. \u00a0Although I have to say that I heartily dislike his \u201cWreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,\u201d<\/a> which seems to go on and on and on. \u00a0Monotonously. \u00a0Forever.) \u00a0I vastly preferred Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez and Carol King. \u00a0As a further stream-of-consciousness note: \u00a0A while ago, I saw Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet as Bob Dylan and Monica Barbara as Joan Baez in the 2024 film A Complete Unknown<\/em>. \u00a0The main result of watching the film is that, to my considerable regret, I came away with a rather strong dislike of Bob Dylan. \u00a0It\u2019s painful to see the idols of one\u2019s youth crumble.<\/p>\n I wonder what tonight\u2019s<\/em> music will be.<\/p>\n Finally, here\u2019s an item from the Christopher Hitchens Memorial \u201cHow Religion Poisons Everything\u201d File<\/em>\u2122: \u00a0\u201cMembers of the Singapore Stake unite with local charity to provide essential aid to vulnerable families: Members and community leaders collaborate to provide over 100 ration bags with essential items and groceries to families in need\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n But that doesn\u2019t begin<\/em> to exhaust the horrors of the Hitchens File<\/em>. \u00a0Here are two additional discoveries from just today:<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" \u00a0 I remind you, once again, of our Becoming Brigham fireside this coming Saturday, 31 January, to be held at 7 PM at the Orem Lakeview Stake Center: 450 West 1800 South, Orem. \u00a0And, in the meantime, don\u2019t fail to watch the first episode of Becoming Brigham; Episode 2 goes up on Monday. \u00a0Watch Episode […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1019,"featured_media":114622,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[38578,56,2938,2905,788,641],"class_list":["post-114619","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-becoming-brigham","tag-book-of-mormon","tag-jewish","tag-latter-day-saint","tag-mormon","tag-temple"],"yoast_head":"\n<\/a><\/a><\/a>\n
