Starting next week, I\u2019ll be teaching \u2014 along with two other classes \u2014 an \u201cIntroduction to the Humanities of Islam.\u201d \u00a0I\u2019m somewhat excited about it, because I\u2019ve completely reconceived the course. \u00a0I\u2019ll be approaching it in a very different way than I ever have before.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an experiment, and, of course, it may crash and burn. \u00a0There\u2019s always that chance. \u00a0But I\u2019m looking forward to seeing how it goes. \u00a0Partly because I\u2019m reconfiguring it to accord a bit more closely with things that really interest me<\/em>. \u00a0And partly because I suspect that teachers teach better when they\u2019re teaching things that really fascinate them.<\/p>\n

Anyway, we\u2019ll be discussing roughly\u00a0a dozen examples of Islamic architecture in some detail over the course of the semester \u2014 including the Alhambra, in Granada, Spain (which is shown above) \u2014 along with a number of significant Islamic literary and philosophical works that I\u2019ve chosen. \u00a0Relatively little attention will be paid to dates and memorization, and much more (I hope) to discussion and appreciation. \u00a0Which is exactly the way I want it.<\/p>\n
