John 2:1-13<\/a><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Just a brief note, today, on the way, theologically, in which the gospel of John employs the miracles of of Jesus:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
Characteristically, John uses the term\u00a0\u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u1fd6\u03bf\u03bd (semeion<\/em>, \u201csign\u201d) to refer to the miraculous acts performed by Christ. \u00a0For example, in today\u2019s reading, at John 2:11, the gospel is summing up the story of the miracle of changing water into wine: \u00a0\u201cThis, the first of his signs [\u03c4\u03b1\u03cd\u03c4\u03b7\u03bd\u00a0. . .<\/span>\u00a0\u1f00\u03c1\u03c7\u1f74\u03bd \u03c4\u1ff6\u03bd \u03c3\u03b7\u03bc\u03b5\u03af\u03c9\u03bd]<\/span>, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed in him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Plainly, in John\u2019s view, these acts aren\u2019t important merely because they\u2019re powerful, unexpected, and humanly inexplicable, but because they point to something else. \u00a0They signify<\/em> something.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Thus, toward the end of the gospel, in 20:30-31, John summarizes what he\u2019s written (and what he\u2019s omitted) with this comment:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd many other\u00a0signs\u00a0truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not\u00a0written\u00a0in this book: \u00a0But these are\u00a0written, that ye might\u00a0believe\u00a0that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have\u00a0life through his\u00a0name.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n<\/p>
The author of John makes no pretense here of writing as a disinterested, scientific historian. \u00a0He\u2019s trying to persuade his readers (or, mostly, in ancient times, his hearers) to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. \u00a0That\u2019s not to say, of course, that his claims aren\u2019t historically true. \u00a0It\u2019s simply to say that historiography, as such, isn\u2019t his primary goal.<\/p>\n
