I had the opportunity, today, of attending a lecture at BYU by Archbishop Charles Joseph Chaput of Philadelphia. \u00a0(Given the fact that the new Philadelphia Temple is rapidly rising\u00a0very near to the\u00a0Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Professor Mauro Properzi<\/a> quipped in introducing him, the Archbishop will\u00a0be able to enjoy his morning coffee every day with the Angel Moroni.)<\/p>\n

On the stand with Archbishop Chaput in the Varsity Theater were, among others, Bishop John Charles Wester of the Catholic diocese of Utah, President Kevin Worthen of Brigham Young University, and Brent Top, the dean of Religious Education at BYU.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Archbishop Chaput began his remarks by discussing the \u201cGreat Charter,\u201d or Magna Carta, of England and its importance in the development of the English-speaking tradition of constitutional democracy. \u00a0He noted \u2014 citing the statement often (and not quite accurately) attributed to Henry Ford, that \u201cHistory is bunk\u201d \u2014 that Americans tend to be impatient with, and relatively uninterested in, the past. \u00a0He thinks that attitude somewhat misguided.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I won\u2019t try to systematically summarize Archbishop Chaput\u2019s remarks but will share some of the notes that I hurriedly typed while listening to his speech, which I hope was recorded and which I also hope will someday be published in one form or other.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

He spoke of the importance of morality in society, and\u00a0of \u201cpeople of conviction fighting for what they believe in the public square.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Is there a culture war? \u00a0Yes, he said. \u00a0In a sense. \u00a0But the blame for that, he observed, is often heaped on people who\u2019re trying to defend traditional values and religious liberty. \u00a0But there\u2019s another side: those who\u2019re trying to overturn<\/em> traditional values and to infringe upon religious expression and religious liberty. \u00a0\u201cNobody,\u201d he remarked, \u201cseems to call them<\/em> culture warriors.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

He lamented the fact that, in his view, cowardice and acedia<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(moral sloth) too often masquerade as tolerance.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

He endorsed charity and justice for all, but insisted that \u201cthat\u2019s never an excuse for compromising with grave evil\u201d nor for permitting our liberty to be whittled away. \u00a0\u201cThe greatest danger\u201d to American society, he said, \u201cis not religious extremism but narcissism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

On another note, he remarked that \u201cA culture of constant chattering is afraid of the silence that reveals its emptiness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

There\u2019s \u201ca lot of common ground,\u201d he said, between Latter-day Saints and Catholics on such issues as religious liberty, family and sexuality, the value of life,\u00a0concern for the poor, and so forth.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

He advised Latter-day Saints to learn from the example of American Catholicism, which he described as both a success story and, more to his point, a cautionary tale of assimilation and absorption. \u00a0\u201cThere\u2019s a fine line between being leaven in<\/em> society,\u201d he commented, \u201cand being devoured by<\/em> society.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of our best Catholic institutions have lost or obscured their Catholic identity,\u201d Archbishop Chaput said, calling special attention to American Catholic colleges and universities. \u00a0He offered specific praise for Ralph Hancock\u2019s March 2014 article (\u201cKeeping Faith in Provo\u201d<\/a>)\u00a0<\/em>in\u00a0First Things,\u00a0<\/em>saying that, plainly, Latter-day Saints are now facing some of the same challenges that have diluted and weakened\u00a0Catholic higher education in the United States. \u00a0He paid tribute to BYU\u2019s religious identity. \u00a0\u201cPlease never lose that,\u201d he admonished his audience.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The question-and-answer session that followed was quite interesting, as well. \u00a0Questions ranged from how or whether to speak of \u201cIslamic terrorism,\u201d how to foster Mormon\/Catholic cooperation, and how to disagree respectfully. \u00a0(In response to that question, Archibishop Chaput cited Martin Luther King\u2019s counsel that \u201cYou have to love your enemy, but your enemy has to know<\/em> that you love him.\u201d \u00a0Still, he said, don\u2019t be cowed into a false tolerance.)<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Archbishop Chaput was friendly, good-humored, and engaging. \u00a0Partially of American Indian descent, he\u2019s a member of the Prairie Band Potowatomi tribe, the first Native American archbishop in the U.S. Catholic Church and only the second Native American to be ordained a Catholic bishop. \u00a0He receives a check every quarter containing his share of the tribe\u2019s casino earnings. \u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t go there. \u00a0But I get the check. \u00a0I felt that I should confess my sin to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
