I\u2019m perpetually angry, I\u2019m told.

Over and over again, I\u2019ve read someone\u2019s account of suffering at the hands of the Mormon patriarchy, or because of oppressive and bigoted \u201cheteronormativity,\u201d or on account of honest questioning, or something of that sort.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

And \u2014 wretched man that I am! \u2014 I\u2019ve sometimes dared to suggest, rather gently, that there might be two sides to the reported experience, and\/or that (even if it\u2019s more or less true) it might not be entirely representative, and\/or that I\u2019ve never ever seen such a thing, and\/or that, even if true, the account doesn\u2019t seem to justify the sweeping conclusions that often accompany such reports (e.g., demanding rejection of Mormonism<\/a> or the total revamping of society) . \u00a0Horrible, mean-spirited, callous, bigoted responses, of course, all of them.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

More times than I can count, I\u2019ve been angrily informed in such cases that I\u2019m devaluing the experiences of others. \u00a0That I lack empathy and am full of unfeeling, vicious, and fanatical hate.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I wonder how such folks will respond to these<\/em> accounts:<\/p>\n

Will they call those who share them liars? \u00a0Dismiss their experiences? \u00a0Will they be \u2014 is it even remotely conceivable that they could<\/em> be \u2014 as cold-hearted and angry as I<\/em> always am?<\/p>\n
