\u00a0<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s reading is \u201cthe Lord\u2019s prayer,\u201d as it\u2019s called.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
It deserves a book. \u00a0(It\u2019s received<\/em> books.) \u00a0And I\u2019ve actually thought about writing one. \u00a0But not today. \u00a0Not here.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
It\u2019s passages like this that tempt me to violate my self-imposed rule not to try to post exhaustive commentary but to limit myself to merely an observation or two. \u00a0I simply don\u2019t have time to do more, and I would soon be unable to do this at all if I were giving an unsustainable amount of time and energy to it.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
So I\u2019ll confine myself to one brief point:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cForgive us our debts,\u201d goes the prayer, \u201cas we also have forgiven our debtors.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
This strikes me as a rather dangerous prayer. \u00a0Those who pray it are essentially recognizing the divine standard of forgiveness, and stating their acceptance of it:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cFor if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: \u00a0But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.\u201d \u00a0(Matthew 6:14-15)<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
That\u2019s a demanding rule.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
So, in order to cheer us all up, I end with a joke:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cLead us not into temptation,\u201d says one wit. \u00a0\u201cWe can find it easily enough on our own.\u201d<\/p>\n
