\u201cCan America\u2019s faith-based law schools restrict sexual activity to heterosexual marriage?\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
Some assure me \u2014 some will probably comment on Facebook and on this very blog to assure me \u2014 that there\u2019s no reason to worry, that I\u2019m paranoid and a fear-monger.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
To which I respond that the famous statement often attributed to Thomas Jefferson reads \u201cEternal vigilance<\/em> is the price of liberty\u201d \u00a0\u2014 not \u201ceternal somnolence<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
I\u2019m reminded of the story in 1 Kings, of Elijah and his confrontation with King Ahab of Israel after three years of severe drought. \u00a0Elijah assures Ahab that drought-ending rain will now come, despite the fact that there are no visible clouds in the sky:<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
And Elijah said to Ahab, \u201cGo up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the rushing of rain.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel.\u00a0And he bowed himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees.<\/span>\u00a0And he said to his servant, \u201cGo up now, look toward the sea.\u201d And he went up and looked and said, \u201cThere is nothing.\u201d And he said, \u201cGo again,\u201d seven times.<\/span>\u00a0And at the seventh time he said, \u201cBehold,\u00a0a little cloud like a man\u2019s hand is rising from the sea.\u201d And he said, \u201cGo up, say to Ahab, \u2018Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to\u00a0Jezreel.<\/strong> \u00a0(1 Kings 18:41-45)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
The time to start preparing, even to start running<\/em>, is when that cloud is first visible on the horizon \u2014 \u201ca little cloud like a man\u2019s hand.\u201d<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
In my judgment, and not in mine alone,\u00a0American religious liberty is at greater risk now than it has ever been \u2014 more endangered than I\u00a0had ever previously imagined that it would<\/em> be \u2014 over the course of my (to some, disturbingly)\u00a0long lifetime.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
